Default Day 4 Denali to Talkeetna

After the busy day previously, it was good to sleep in this morning. We enjoyed a nice breakfast buffet at the lodge, and then took a long walk. Our bags didn't have to go out in the hall until 9AM. We departed on the motorcoach at 11:30AM and headed for the Denali depot where we would meet the train again. The train ride to Talkeetna was about 5 hours long and while on the train we enjoyed a delicious lunch in the dining room and spent the rest of the time watching for wildlife. It was neat to see a Bald Eagle and a nest along the way. We also saw some more moose and some nice beaver dams.

We arrived in Talkeetna where we were met by our motorcoach and taken to the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge. This place was gorgeous with beautiful views of Mt. McKinley (when the clouds cleared). Both Jake and I would love to go back and stay a little longer at this lodge. The little town of Talkeetna was just that, but it was interesting. The shuttle ran from the lodge down to the village about every 20 minutes, so it was easy to get down there. Many people went into town to eat dinner, but Jake and I decided to try the fancy restaurant at the lodge. It was a great choice. Our meals were both some of the best we have ever had, and the service was outstanding. The chef even went around to all the tables and chatted with the guests and really made you feel welcomed. If you want the local flavor, I would suggest eating downtown, but if you are in the mood for something a little more upscale this is a wonderful place.

There was no AC at this lodge, but they did provide a fan and the room was very large, quiet and comfortable.

Phyll

What a nice time you had there...the views must have been outstanding, once it cleared...good food too, it's always so nice when the chef comes to chit chat...

I find it interesting that in Alaska you are always longing for air conditioning! Accomodations and food sound great so far, not to mention the sights - keep it coming!
