Default Poll: Would you like to see the wine list?

When you're on a cruise, do you drink wine with your dinner? By the bottle or by the glass? Red or white? Do you ever bring it with you or do you just order off the wine list? Do you drink it with dinner at home also or just on cruises?

Cheers,
Michelle P.

We generally have one bottle of wine each night of the cruise with dinner. We almost always drink red wine and tend to order "bigger' reds like Riojas, Zinfandels, Nebbiolos, and Barolos. Once in a while we'll have a lighter red like a Pinot Noir or perhaps a bottle of some kind of sparkler.

We have carried some on but generally purchase onboard, mainly because wine is heavy to schlepp. We buy moderate priced reds in the $30 menu range. It doesn't pay to buy super great reds because they have no time to rest, bouncing on a ship day in and day out.

Cheers!

Yes, we usually drink wine with dinner. We usually buy by the bottle. We drink both reds and whites, depending on our mood, what we're eating, etc. We order from the wine list, because we can't be bothered with the logistics of planning, buying, packing and transporting wine to a cruise. We often drink wine at home with meals.

James drinks red, I drink white, so it's by the glass, and not every night. We did however, enjoy a wonderful bottle of white at the specialty restaurant on Legend. Right now, I' m on a NO alcohol diet because of the antibiotics. I miss my wine!

Conundrum - that's the name! Thanks Phyllbo!

We usually order one bottle for each of us. A white (Caymus Conundrum) for me if they have it and a Cabernet for Jake. Then we go by the glass when those are gone.

I don't drink wine but I love cooking with it. And not that crap that they call cooking wine. I wouldn't give that to a wino!

Welcome to my world…The wine list looks something like this…
1. I didn’t get to go into all the jewelry stores in St. Thomas
2. I should have bought that art piece I had in my hand.
3. Why do we have to go sightseeing instead of shopping.
4. Do you believe that the captain didn’t remember us from 2 years ago.
5. Are you going to stay in the casino all night.

I don’t drink wine but I sure get my fill of it…

I'm not much of a drinker of any alcoholic beverages, so certainly not a wine connisseur.

Once I was at a wine tasting onboard the Celebrity Constealltion, hosted by Michel Roux. As we swished, and sniffed a wide variety of wines, in a vast array of wine glasses I did come across one I thought to be quite tasty... so I asked Michel if I could see the box .

depends upon the mood i am in. I like wine, hubby doesn't. So if i decide to have some with dinner i will order a glass. I like a lighter white wine - Pino Grigios. The heavier, oakier whites and reds will give me a headache.

We have a bottle that usually lasts mid-week on the ship, then we order by the glass. Sometimes, a table full will share wines. We never schlep wine to the ship. We used to have wine every night at home but have long since stopped. We always order it when out for dinner, and we enjoy both reds and whites.

We bought wine on board, too heavy to carry. We usaully don't drink at home, just once and a while. We bought two bottles on the cruise, they do save it for you from night to night. We also bought two glasses. We tend to reds , but I did order a glass of blush on deck one day as it seemed so refreshing!

We always order wine when dining out but rarely drink it at home. Onboard Briliance they had a ten bottle wine package that we bought. Robin likes whites and I like reds so that was perfect, we each got 5 bottles (great for an 11 nighter) which they recorked after dinner and brought out at the next meal as we only drank 1/2 bottle each with our meal. They even brought our open bottle to Chops and Porofinos so that we could have them with dinner there.

My "Better Half" makes her own wine, so we do tend to drink some wine with dinner most nights. We've experimented over about 5 years with different wine'making stores, wines, etc, until we've found 3 or 4 wines that aren't too heavy, too light, or too acidic.
Our preferred store bought wine is the red Italian Valpollicella (Masi or similar).

So, on our upcoming 11-day cruise, (our first) here's the plan. 2 or 3 bottles of Maggies wine discreetly smuggled (err, I mean carried) on board, then buy some on board the rest of the nights.

Having never been to the ports we're visiting unsure of whether or not it's possible to buy decent wines there. I know you can buy hard liquor and beer there, just unsure about the wine situation. (But we will find out!)

I will start dinner with a cocktail. Then I will have a red wine, since I always eat either beef, lamb, or game meat. I will then have an after dinner sherry or port. My wife usually starts out with Champagne or a Bellini and then will ocassionally have white wine followed by Bailey's with dessert.

At home, I shy away of all alchohol due to the calories.

We love wine & enjoy learning more about it. We attend tastings frequently at home. There's always a case or two in the wine cellar.

Of course we drink wine on our cruises. Our selections vary w/ the meal / menu. One of the nicest things about the cruise is we can order different bottles for each of us depending on what we're having. If there's some left over, we may have to "rough it" the next night & have that last glass w/o the ideal food pairing.

We do bring wine on board & pay the corkage fee b/c we also enjoy champagne. The lines rarely have our favorites & all the motion of the ship isn't good for the bubbles anyway.

You didn't ask but on our last NCL cruise we found the medium range wines to be very well priced. The low end stuff had a high mark-up -- almost 2-3x the price at a store at home. The others were only marked up a few dollars & we even found 1 bottle that was cheaper on the cruise then at home! The really great part is you can drink stuff that is normally too young to drink on land b/c the motion of the ship ages it faster.

roller--

You could save some money by ordering two bottles the first night--one red and one white. They'd be happy to bring both to your table each evening. Then order replacements as you run out, then glasses as necessary the last night or two. Only downside is that it limits the variety of wines you can taste, but savings can be substantial.

We order a bottle of wine for every other night. We tend to move between reds and whites depending on our moods and the food we're eating. We frequently order a bottle of champagne for one of the formal nights and share with everyone at our table. Keeps the waiters guessing, though, which glass to set at our place.

We brought wine and champagne aboard with us on one cruise, but decided it wasn't worth the effort for the future, just order a nice bottle off the wine list! Sure wish Carnival had a wine sommelier, because the waiters just aren't knowledgeable in this area. That's one of the things I really enjoyed about our RCI cruise!
