Default O.K. Help Dumb, Dumb, and Dumber out!

That would be me of course!

I'm booking my return flight from New Orleans in October for Saturday morning and get a direct flight on Southwest. I figure we'll get a room on Friday night after we leave the ship and party a bit on Bourbon St. and then catch the 10:25 a.m flight Saturday morning. No problem, right?

Then it dawns on me! The ship arrives in port on SATURDAY morning, not Friday! I had just finished booking nonrefundable tickets when this occured to me. Geeez!

Someone please tell me if we are the first ones off the ship and can race the 15 miles to the airport we can make the flight! Because if we miss it not only are we out the price of the tickets, but also the price of new tickets on another airline, and probably a hotel room and a night of partying on Bourbon Street.

Regards,
Dumb and Dumber!

I can't imagine in this day and age making a 10:15 flight unless you were being escorted through by the head of Homeland Security.
I don't know exactly how you booked your tickets, but, many can be rebooked to another flight for a fee (which would obviously be less than eating the whole price of the ticket).
I hope this works out.
Another alternative would be to add a flight cancelation surcharge or fee to every weekend diner at the restaurant for the next few months.

Thomas

Call Southwest. You believe you can change the time of your flight for a per ticket fee. I had to do this once with them but it was before 9/11. At the time I paid $75 per ticket to make the change.

If there are no problems and you are the first ones off the ship I think you will make your flight. It's just to bad you will miss the partying on Bourbon Street. It can be a lot of fun, especially on a Friday night.

I also like Darcy's idea, call the airline and see what they would charge for a later flight and cancel the hotel for Fri night. Even if they charge you to change the time, much less of a loss if you did miss that early flight, best of luck, just a forgetful moment, happens to all of us at some point.

Unfortunately, the 10:25 a.m. flight is the only one on Southwest going from N.O. to Jax.

We either have to make that flight or switch to another airline and lose the nonrefundable tickets. And I was so close to booking the refundable tickets for $30 more per ticket but King of Cheap didn't do it. Drat!!!

Thomas

Check to see if you can't change to another day if you pay the fee. I believe you might be able to do this.

From the SW website.....Some Discount Fares may be nonrefundable. Nonrefundable fares may be used as credit toward the purchase of another ticket.

I'd check with the airlines.

Yes, what about switching days? Could you stay an extra day or two?

Maybe you could rent a car and drive it back if you miss the flight? Only 8 hours or so...

Cheers,
Michelle P.

Thomas .. Since the flight was just booked, I'd call up and explain the stupid move you made <G>, and beg them to change it to a day later.

You MIGHT just find a sympathetic voice on the other end of the phone!

At least you didn't already book a Bourbon Street Hotel for the wrong night using Priceline.

Dear D,D, and D,

I have driven that route several hundred times..and the only way to make it in 15 mins is to have A.J. Foyt behind the wheel with a police escort...especially on a Friday morning. Thomas it is a tricky situation as to where you getr off of the ship and the airport is way west of town...and the traffic at that time is so horrendous(sp) that about the only way to make it is to take a helicopter from the port(seriously),,I dont know what to tell you in the way of advice just what I have experienced. I am sorry for your situation and wish I could help.

Well, the problem with changing to another day is we both need to be back at the restaurant for Saturday night. Now if we can't get back then we can't! But I'm sure we can fly back on Delta or something and get back in time for business to open but I wouldn't want to book a flight on Delta later in the afternoon not knowing if we will make it on Southwest.

If I were to book something on Delta, it would only be done when we are at the airport in N.O. and after we missed the Southwest flight. If we miss the Southwest flight and rent a car to drive back we still wouldn't get back in time.

I must be displaying the first signs of Alzheimer's. Anybody out there, cause there's nobody in here!

Regards,
Thomas

Actually John, the ship gets in on SATURDAY morning, so I'm hoping the traffic isn't that bad. I've flown into N.O. many times, and will again on July 6th, for business and I know how bad the traffic is. Maybe if I take control of the ship on the last night and full throttle it home I can get the ship docked by 6:00 a.m. Ya' think?

Thomas

I live in New Orleans..you are cutting it way too close...not only is the problem clearing the ship, then traffic (always when you are in a hurry there will be an accident), but then Southwest is the busiest carrier at the airport and saturdays are big cruise days and convention let outs so the lines are long and they advise you to be at the airport 60-90 minutes before departure..you might check with southwest and see if your flight is badly overbooked and explain your circumstances and admit it's your fault and see if they'll switch you to the sunday flight and just pay the penalty fee...they are known to be reasonable folks so if your flight is badly overbooked they might meet you half way. then you get to deal with the hotel which is probably easier..you don't want to end your cruise stressed out after having a week of fun

now of course having said all that IF you are the very first ones off the ship, reclaim your luggage and catch a cab and tip him $25 bucks and there is zero traffic on i-10 and when you get to the counter there is no one standing in line and you breeze thru security with no problem and southwest flight is 45 minutes late it will be a piece of cake (smile)...it's really odd, southwest usually has several flights a day to each of their destinations but to yours there is only one on saturday and it does not fit the timetable to carry cruise folks

fyi, if you elect to bite the bullet and change and pay the penalty, rebook for the last flight out on sunday night and not only enjoy bourbon street on saturday night but enjoy new orleans on sunday morning and take in a saints game if they are in town

I'm still gonna say call the airlines. Even if you have to book another airlines to get home you might be able to get a credit towards another flight on another date if you pay the penalty and use the ticket within the year. Worth the try to ask.....The worst they can say is no and you won't be any worse off than you are now.

That's true. I can ask can't I ? But then if the agent says anyone that dumb to book a flight home from a cruise who doesn't know what day the ship docks ought to pay the penalty I'd have to agree. But then I think the penalty is about the same price as the ticket anyway.

Thomas

don't be to hard on yourself..when one gets into a "cruise zone" you can't always be held accountable for your mind set..besides the southwest people have heard alot worse !!!

Poor Thomas! I hope the airline will be accomodating. My mother only uses SW (she lives in Birmingham) and has always been able to change her tickets. Not get a refund, but just change them.

Hopefully you'll get a sympathetic agent. Have you thought about crying? If you get a female agent tell her you are sooo worried about ruining your wife's vacation. If you get a male agent, tell him your wife is going to KILL you if you can't solve this problem.

SWA will give you credit towards another flight with your current nonrefundable tickets within the year. They don't advertise it greatly though. If you travel alot take the credit and book on a different airline for this trip.

ALso if you dont like one customer service rep, call abck until you get the answer you want. ;-)
Best fo luck!
