Default Does having a good Cruise Director make an impact on your cr

I saw this question on another site and it got me thinking of all the cruise directors I have sailed with and if they made the trip that much more stimulating....

What do you all think- can you even remember their names?

Larry Garlutzo on Carnival's Legend immediately comes to mind. He was charming, funny and very talented (guitar and singing) and really made that particular cruise a stand-out, so I'd say Yes to your question.

I'd say yes. On our last cruise, John Heald wasn't only entertaining and funny, but he did a really good job at calming people's fears about the hurricanes that were chasing us around, as well as dealing with how folks that were from Florida could get in touch with their families.

Have actually only had one CD that was memorable. Jim Canon, Celebrity was a charming and quite entertaining man. He was probably the most visible CD we have had and the only one I remember. I have compared all others to him and found none that could meet or surpass his charms.

After cruising for 30 yearsand 50+ cruises on many lines and different ships, I can only think of 4 or 5 cruise directors that stand out in my mind as really being anything special....The rest neither added nor took away from my cruise. Overall ,it seems I perferred the CD's on several of the Royal Carribean ships the best. My least favorite was NCL.

Its interesting that Tweety mentioned Jim Canon of Celebrity because I felt he was "weak" at best and my least favorite of the Celebrity CD's.

absolutely, Paul Becque on the QM2 he ws the youngest EVER CD when he was headhunted by cunard at the age of 22! Wow! he is superb, he always has a kind word for everyboy and is so extrodinarily talented it is a joy to be on his cruises. He even remebered us from our first time, think of how many other people he must see. He can win CD of the year for any year you care to mention!

To a large extent the CD's job is one of those in which if you don't have anything bad to say about the cruise staff or the program, he/she is probably doing the job well. Despite the numerous public aspects of the job, a big part of it takes places behind the scenes in an administrative capacity.

That said, obviously you'll "connect" better with someone who shares your sense of humor, your personal experiences, your view of the world. But you can't expect that to happen every time. And, of course, it will be different for different people.

I felt that Jim Cannon was one of the finer CD's I've encountered (twice), especially when he was teamed up with Amanda Reed as SoHo. They made a superb statement for Celebrity as a place to have a lot of fun, but that also catered to ladies and gentlemen. I believe that neither of them is working on the ships anymore, and I think that's too bad. We also sailed with an RCL CD named Clo something-or-other (maybe O'Conner, O'Brien, O'Doul), whose Irish sense of humor just put me on the floor laughing. One day at a quiz thing that very few people showed up for, she regaled us with the story of how, when she worked for Renaissance, she was CD on a nudist cruise and had to escort one couple to the Captain to be married. She said that the bride wore a veil, the groom wore a bow tie, and that was pretty much it. Had me in stitches.

Most of the rest of them are interchangeable parts as far as I'm concerned, which isn't a criticism. Their jobs are very difficult and require tremendous stamina and energy. As a group they do a fine job.

Wow- so many answers, so quickly!

My first 2 cruises I can barely even remember the full names of the CD's, however, having sailed on the Radiance this May, Gordon Whatman was the CD and was beyond spectacular and actually made you want to attend every activity. He was so interactive with the passengers and was just everywhere but in a good way.

i cannot remember the names of any of the cruise directors on any of my cruises and i can say without a shadow of a doubt that their presence on the ship added absolutely nothing to my cruise --unless it was the annoying bingo announcements

I think the cruise director sets the tone for the shipboard activities and entertainment. I also think Jim Cannon was one of the best because he was very personable and accessible to passengers. Another excellent one who is no longer with Celebrity was David Graham. Matt Baker on "Enchantment of the Seas" was lots of fun. There are others I've liked - and a few who had no personality whatsoever. I've been on lots of cruises and remember most of the CD's. That is because I always strike up a conversation with them at various events that I'm participating in.

i think that a really good cruise director and staff do so much "behind the scenes" work that we don't know about to make our cruises memorable. They set the tone for the activites(day & night). A really good CD and staff will get things "hopping" and have really good interactions with the passengers. It makes a difference in the general "flow" of things

Yes, I think a good C/D helps make or break a cruise and I can remember a few good ones, and not so good ones.

I personally feel that a CD can enhance a cruise but cannot ruin one. On a Royal Caribbean cruise last year I did not care for the cruise director but it by no means made the cruise less enjoyable. On the other hand, I have had CD's, Adrian Lewis on NCL, that greatly enhanced the cruise.

If you are on the cruise to be entertained then the CD will have more bearing on your enjoyment. If you are on the cruise to enjoy yourself then the CD will have less of an impact.

Take care,
Mike

After 40 years of cruising, and 100+ cruises, I kind of agree with Lougee as well. In general, they neither make, or break a cruise. I often remember a CD when I see him, however I seldom remember their names. I do recall that when we sailed the Carnival Pride last year, the CD would hide from you when he saw you coming. I don't know if he was afraid you would ask him something about which he knew nothing, or what!! In any case, in my opinion, there are very few who are truly memorable.
Happy sailing,
Ken

I agree with Lougee and Pg. CD's have had no impact on our cruises whatsoever. Keith and I remember a CD on Princess years back because he got in trouble with the law. The Feds met him when we arrived at our final port, but neither of us can remember his name!

In "the old" days the Cruise Director used to be responsible for almost all passenger activities, both on board and in port. They used to run the shore excursions as well, until the cruise lines realized how much money they were making on them <G>

In today's cruise world, the job of CD involves a lot of reports and adminstration work, on top of having to present an upbeat and entertaining face for passengers.

I think at the moment there may be a half dozen or so that can handle it all, yet still leave a memorable positive impression on passengers. Not saying others don't do a good job, but they do it managing their staff, as opposed to being the "out front" visible entertainment leader.

I don't think a good CD can make or break a cruise. That said, I still remember the CD from our 1st cruise. His name was Lenny and he was from England. He was very funny and informative and seemed to be everywhere! When we were shopping on shore excursions he was running up and down the street helping all the passengers. I can't even remember the name of the CD on our second cruise. We passed him on the ship once and he didn't even say hello. Don't imagine we'll see him again!
