Default A gift for a 7yr old boy?

Hi CMs,
I need to buy a present for my 7yr old step-grandson. They live in another state and we are only able to see him once a year. This year we will be visiting there on his birthday (I usually just send $). I don't have a clue as to what 7yr old boys are into! Can anyone give me some ideas?
Thanks for your help,

I feel your pain (smile)...my experience has taught me that 7 year old boys like things that are "techie(??) " and something that makes them go "wow"..A suggestion, your son/daughter can probably give you a good lead (after all they have to live with him and whatever you give him after you leave)..but you may also want to buy one share of stock in whatever company makes the product that you are buying him. This accomplished several things 1) very often he'll get a coupon for one of their products along with the annual stockholder report or may be invited to "test" new products..2) it starts him along the road to understanding the stock market and you can purchase additional shares for him for birthdays, holidays etc....over the years it builds and then when he's ready for college he can cash the stock in

or

you can send the whole family on a disney cruise (remember this is a cruise website)

good luck

MY 7 year old son LOVES sports, transformers, books, music. Also he likes Play station 2 and gameboy advance (video games). Like someone said ask Mom and Dad.

Good Luck

Hi Fern,
I don't think you can go wrong with a video game, I'm sure his mom can tell you what game station he has and you can get him a new game.....I know boys that age love that stuff.

Can't go wrong with Lego. It's creative, educational, and QUIET!! My son is now 16 and (secretly) still loves his Lego!!

Hold on you guys some of those suggestons are pretty pricey!!!
I agree with the Lego, or a game boy game( they are not too exspensive, but make sure he actually has a game boy!)
I I really think you should ask mom and dad, I mean he might be into speorts, and then again he might be into a " series" of books. Ask.

As for the stock suggestion , that is very sensible but any seven year old I know would hate to unwrap a stock certificate, that's worse then a gift certificate to a clothing store!

Why not ask his parents?

Thanks for all your suggestions! I loved Lego (still have my 1st set, I won't tell you how long I've had it, but I may take it to Antiques Roadshow!) so I'm thinking of getting him a set. I know his parents don't want anything that makes noise! Hey BJ, maybe I should just bring him to Oaklawn next spring with us and let him "win" his own present!

I have a six year old and he is heavy into "Scooby Doo" and "Spiderman" (and anything else like Superman, the Hulk etc). Make sure you check before buying video games as some parents don't allow kids to play those. My boys both love the educational computer games, like "Jump Start" Phonics, etc. Legos are great but they do tend to travel all over the house. Ever stepped on those babies in bare feet? Yeouch! He also loves to read - especially Magic Tree House and Magic School Bus chapter books. Good luck!

Hot Wheels, YuGio(sp?), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are making a "hot" comeback.
Definately ask the parents for suggestions.

Thanks everyone, for your suggestions. I looked at Lego sets today-boy, have they changed! I was going to just get a box of Lego blocks, but they are all "models" of some sort! I think I'll just wait and take him to Wal-Mart and let him pick something out! At least I'll know he likes it!
Thanks again for your help,
