Default Brick, by Brick........

This is a cautionary note for all those going to St Maarten, and will be shopping downtown on the Front St., Dutch side, There is major construction going on, to beautify, the road there. While listening to the shopping info, on the Century, they mentioned in passing there was some construction work .....Never once did they tell anyone that it was the main st..!! this cruise was a tough one for me, in that my foot was quite swollen, and I was using a cane. The shoes I could wear that day, that fit, due to this, had a small heel...that along with the cane, made traversing this road very difficult. With each step, the heel went into the sand, along with the heat you can imagine the discomfort..
But mine was nothing compared to the people, who came to town in wheel chairs...Between the cars that STILL came through, the workers, who seemed like the most inexperienced road workers we had ever seen, the mini back hoes, the conduits sticking up from side walk, the stacks of concrete, piled every block or so, the trucks that had to be pushed from the sand, they were stuck in, and the heat..it was tough going for even the most avid shopper,[moi]...I spoke to some people that wore sneakers, and was told it was rough going in the best of footwear, so please, note this if you are going...They say, this could continue till Dec....NEXT year, when I go, I am SURE it will be finished It will be beautiful, once they finish....All the better to shop

well....... I bought a black and white diamond ring...Killing time while it was sized was difficult..My hubby and I managed to lose one another, and I sat on a stack of concrete blocks while I looked up and down, watching the activity, waiting for hime to magically appear..and he did !!! He surprised me in Nassau, with an Italian Lucite, and swarovski pendant, and I bought some Roberto Cavalli perfume, and some watches onboard...all in all a good haul

Trip.. sounds like you should have maybe just grabbed a taxi and headed for the French side.

Sorry your shopping jaunt was so tough.. but maybe you can get it entered as an Olympic event..... obstacle course shopping!

So.. how was the rest of the cruise, the ship , etc? I think the Century still has one of the most beautiful dining rooms at sea.

Well, thanks for that info Trip. Now I feel just a little bit better that I will NOT be going to St. Maarten on the QM2 in Nov. However, a little construction work certainly didn't seem to deter you from your shopping! Glad you got some nice goodies.

We should let that be a lesson to us everytime we complain about our construction zones....it can always be worse someplace else.

Glad the construction didn't deter you from making a nice purchase. You'll enjoy it all the more because it was so difficult to obtain.

Trip, you crack me up!

You could have a motto like a postal delivery person---neither rain nor snow nor swollen feet and torn up sidewalks or anything else will keep you from your shopping.

Hope your feet are doing better now.

Phyll
