For all new cruisers here are the experts tips!

This thread is for all new cruisers to get the advice and tips from the seasoned cruisers. Let's hear it from all the veterans out there.

Please post one (and only one) of your best tips for new cruisers.

Mine: Pack 1/2 the clothes and twice the money.

Regards,
Thomas

Research excursions that you do on your own. Do not necessarily do the ships' excursions. Research, research, and read some more!! Some places/times you s h o u l d do the ships' excursions though.
This time I am planning on doing our own excursions to save $$(there are 4 of us this time;not just 1).
I am not a veteran;only 1 previous cruise.

Don't forget a bungy cord if you have a balcony room. Nothing like listening to the waves at night while you sleep.

Take along the moist wipes (individual packs) handy to have when you're ashore.

When booking a guarantee book the category you will be comfortable with. If an upgrade happens then that's just icing on the cake; but don't expect it.

A travel wallet that can be put under clothing is a must. It's convenient and deters pickpockets. Just don't load it with everything you own. Then it stands out like a sore thumb.

Research is key: Know before you go.

Have an open mind and remember you aren't in America anymore. Learn about where you are going.

Don't sweat the little things.

Take care,
Mike

Tip you cabin steward up front w/cash, let them know your wants and needs every day and let him know more (money) will follow. You'd be surprised at what he or she will do for you.

Pack and outfit in your carry ons for first night's dinner. Luggage delivery can be delayed, and it makes the cruise start out so much better going to dinner after a shower and wearing fresh clothes.

Oh.. and don't forget your cabin mate!! I did once, and it was a mess <G>

Women AND men, bring appropriate clothing! If there are three formal nights, pack dressy things. If you're going to a hot climate, pack shorts, pants and tees in natural fabrics that breathe. Above all, pack a pair or two of comfortable shoes, along with dress shoes for those dressy nights.

I change my #1 to Papabill's: Get the Passport. Makes the whole process so much easier.

Take care,

If flying always fly down the day before. You never know when you might have a delayed (or canceled) flight and missing the ship could be very expensive.

Something that we always do if the ship doesn't have the automatic tipping, gather all the tip money's for each person you tip and put it in an envelope and when its time to tip, you are all set, no running around trying to change bills, etc. You can always add or subtract from it, but then no hassles that last "tip" night.

My tip fo this post:

bring along the Shout portable stain treat wipes. Handy when you spill chocolate on a white blouse. Also some liquid cold water wash to do delicates in the sink. Put it in a small plastic medicaine bottle, and don't take the large container it comes in.
If you plan to do laundry, take your soap in a baggie, and dryer sheets too. That is if you are on a long cruise, say 10 or more days. I never do laundry any way, just buy new things. lol

If you enjoy a good size cup of coffee in the morning, bring a thermo travel mug! A small roll of duct tape, especially handy when the zipper on the suitcase breaks.

Bring a real feather pillow rolled tightly in your carry-on. You can use it on the plane to fit the strange configurations of the plane for napping plus your pillow will not fall on the person behind you like the airline versions do. I could never sleep on a plane until we started doing this.

Also you will then have a pillow you know and like for sound sleeping on the ship.

Hello,

Don't feel the need to plan out every minute of every day. Take some time to just sit back and people watch and relax. Very therapeutic!!

Take a few minutes after unpacking to find out whats going on , on the ship. Read and ask questions.
Our first cruise, it was Wed. before we found out about the free bar hoppers T shirts, and we had been to visit most of the bars.
We missed the prim rib, the first night and it was the only night they had it also the cherries jubilee.
Two or three days went by before we seen the soda stickers.
Now I look for everything, and read all the letters in my room.

Be kind & friendly to the staff & they will respond in kind. Say good morning to everyone you meet, it will start your day off right!

My husband and I just recently went on our first cruise on Carnival Conquest out of New Orleans - two things I wish we had of taken were walkie-talkies and stain remover for clothes. My husband and I would do different things sometimes and wished we could communicate with each other. Also - the self-service laundry is great except there was no stain remover - like Spray and Wash. Carry more casual clothes than dress clothes. We wore shorts and tops, and tenny shoes most of the time except at dinner at night. Carry more money than you think you will need. Being first-time cruisers we over-spent with formal night pictures, souvenirs, excursions, etc.

Ok, heres a tip for all parents,
baggie the outfits for your kids. put socks, undies, T-shirt and shorts in together. Packs much easier and saves an incredible amount of time and space I know you only wanted 1 but here's another. brong a dollar store hanging clothesline. hangs off the shower and is great for drying bathing suits

Re: For all new cruisers here are the experts tips!

I can't believe it! All the good tips were already said. My only tip is to look in your closet and pick the clothes that don't wrinkle much. That way you don't look like you slept in your clothes when you are ready to wear them. Either that or just get a drink when you get on board and relax, you're on vacation! Oops! That was two tips. Do I get arrested by the "tip police"? <G>

Hi Donna,

I'm from the Corning/Elmira area, but I've been a Bills' season ticket holder for 20 years. It's a fun 2 1/2 hr. drive each way, especially in winter. No cruises planned yet, but I don't plan anything too far ahead. <G>

Put money in envelopes...use one for tips, one for casino, one for each excursion you have planned (whether it's for tips or the actual excursion and tips). We did this last year and found it so handy, no more last minute dash trying to get exact $ together for tips, etc. I mark each envelope for it's intended purpose.
