For those that have never seen a sink hole in Florida this is it. This is one of our big ones. It is still growing and many homes around it have been evacuated.
Whoa Nellie BOzo...That is a big one Ray...hope it is not anywhere near you and Helen. I noticed the school zone signs on the roadway..how close is to the school?
Wow! Is there any "PERFECT" place to live???? Up here in Northern Michigan we have vile, long, nasty winters, gorgeous summers, no hurricanes or tornados, no earthquakes - just 6 months of horrible weather.
How deep is that thing? Looks like the pool area at that house is going to go. Geeze, does insurance cover a disaster like that? How sad to know that the earth may swallow your property. Mother Nature sure is irritated this year.
Unfortunately you will find that insurance companies here in Florida have an exclusion for sinkholes and that is another entirely differant type of insurance. For some strange reason you are also able to claim damages against the person who sold you the property in most cases too. I don;t understand why but there it is. As for why they happen. Florida is on top of a huge limestone formation from when this used to be the seafloor and fresh water eats away at it and causes huge underwater caverns and tunnels. When a cavern goes dry or there is very little limestone left on top the roof sometimes caves in and there you have the beginnings of a sinkhole.
Jim

Florida:scary looking bugs,sinkholes,hurricanes..Hmmm...I think I would move to California if I had to choose between the two!!
