Default HOLY COW! Has anyone bought a new mattress lately?

We purchased a new mattress and box spring yesterday, and its been along time since we bought one.

Wow, I feel like I am sleeping 20 feet off the ground. When did they start making the mattresses so thick? My dogs can hardly get up on the bed. I was considering using a child rail last night so I did not fall out of bed!

One of the most comfortable mattresses I ever slept on was a thick (5 or 6 inches?) foam rubber one on a wooden platform in a hotel in Bangkak, Thailand. Guess this is one place where size doesn't always matter.

Hi Mary,
We recently bought a trundle bed and did see the others, I was amazed, you almost need a step stool to get into bed, but gosh, they do feel confy :-)

MM, yes, we bought one in August, and you're right - you almost need a step-stool to get into bed! fortunately, we are both tall people, but the poor dog and cat had trouble adjusting! Love that pillow-top though, SO comfy!

I too bought a new pillow-top mattress 6 months ago,and have found it VERY hard to find sheets.I was told by the mattress company that 18" SHOULD fit, after trying 3 different sets in the 18,I had to go up to the 21-22".And they fit! Wonder when the sheet makers are going to start making more sheets to fit these monsters! And I hope they make them in patterns,so far only found the solids.Sheets or cruise...hmmm...both so costly..think I will take the cruise and wash my sheets more often!!

Keith and I haven't bought a mattress in a long time, but we do have a pillowtop. I always regretted buying it. It's an Eastern King, meaning that it's six inches longer than a California King, and it's always been difficult to find sheets for it. For years now, I've bought them when we go to Phoenix to visit Keith's brother and his wife. And yes, sheets are expensive, always were. It's a mystery to me why mfgrs haven't kept up with the size changes.

And speaking of size changes, furntiure these days is huge! I plan to have my family room sofa reupholstered for yet a fourth time, because I can't find a sofa to fit the space. Designers seems to think we all live in palaces.

We bought a top and bottom pillow top, after my surgery. We has a motionless water bed, I didn't want to give up, but, boy oh boy..comfort, AND height...When we got a Yorkie last summer, I was convinced this teeny pooch would never be able to jump on the bed, and almost convinced hubby to get a pet ramp, they make for this purpose well, guess what..he did it!!!

Interesting thread. I did want to comment on the sheet situation thought. I am from the US and after moving to Canada, I decided I wanted new sheets. Guess what! A queen size bed in the States is not the same size as one in Canada! I had to go back to the States to get sheets to fit my bed.

Hey Trip. I have two Yorkies. One has no problem getting in bed at night, but poor little Lucy makes about three attempt before making a good landing. (Little gal bounces off the side for a few times if I'm not right there to pick her up and help). Don't you just love Yorkies!!!! Happy Sailing

Trip,

I have a Jack Russel and if another animal comes on the TV she will actually run up to the TV and bite it. She is about two and a half years old now, and we still think it is hysterical when she does this.

My little Yorkies have the best disposition too. I have raised three litters and believe me it is hard to let them go. I always make sure they go to good homes and have turned people down because I didn't feel comfortable about them getting one of my puppies. I have the Mommy and I kept one of her smallest puppies from her first litter three and a half years ago because people wanted to buy her and breed her. I could have marked her papers so they couldn't have registered them AKC, but so many people are registering CKC now a days. She was the sweetest little thing, her name was Dink. We lost her last summer due to a vary rare disease that they still can't tell me what it actually was, it was something to do with her immune system going haywire and her body tried to destroy itself. I had her to a specialist 110 miles from here and ran up quite the Vet bill, in the end we had to put her to sleep because she was suffering so bad. Her body literally was eating itself. Now I just have the Mommy and the only puppy she had in her last litter. Mommy is done with having puppies and I'm thinking about breeding Lucy when she is old enough, she is only 1 1/2. I would post a picture and show them off but I don't have a scanner nor do I know how to post pictures, I don't even have a digital camera. We also have a Sheltie (he is my daughters and she is away at college) and he thinks he is a little lap dog too. Shelties are wonderful dogs as well, he is very gentle and grew up with little Lucy. He played with her from the time they were pups and has always been very gentle with her. Well I'm running out of space, and you know how we Yorkie owners can talk and talk about our little dogs. Funny how the topic of mattresses got us to this! Happy Sailing P.S. Wouldn't it be great if we could bring our dogs with us when we cruise? (Afterall they wouldn't take up much room)

Daneen that is so sad about your little Yorkie. I know that had to be very difficult for you all. I actually could take my Jack Russel with me on the cruise as she is an assistant dog for my hearing difficulty. However, she has been trained to bark whenever anyone come near our door, because I can't hear doorbells and if I am not close enough to the front door I would not hear them knocking either. So, if she were along I doubt anyone in that area would get any sleep at all.

If you want to post pictures or have them on your computer then all you need to do is have them developed onto a CD whenever you take your film in. It is not costly to do that at Walmart and they come out wonderfully. Then you can easily add them onto your postings.

Hey, I never once said I was the photographer or even a good one at that . Actually, I think my 9 year old stepson took the picture but don't hold me to that.

I still have the old fashioned type mattress/box spring and am having one heck of a time trying to find a new set! I really don't care for the pillow top business and so many of them are so squishy!!! I stopped looking right before the holidays, now I'll have to start up again, I guess!

After I finally find one, then I'll be searching for sheets I'm sure as some of my real old sets don't fit my current mattress that well. I hate the thought of buying new sheets, seems very silly when I have alot as it is.

Decisions, decisions!

We just bought a new set from Costco, Sealy pillow top and boxspring for $400!!. After looking around and going into sticker shock from the stores, we finally found this set and let me tell you, every night when I climb into bed I say "hello bed" and sink in! Best mattress I have ever owned, and the height is great since I am tall. Almost a regal experience when I climb in, and it discourages the kids from jumping on it!

Have you sailed Holland America lately? We sailed the Oosterdam in Oct., and they have the EuroTop mattresses aboard. The bed is really, really high, but oh so comfy...After returning, the lovely Mrs. Jones is looking for a new bed.....
Happy sailing,
Ken

When I moved here to Florida from NH I did not have a bed to bring with me. My last job in NH was as a live in housekeeper. They gave me a twin bed to sleep on and it had a plywood platform with a 2 inch pad for a matress. I was at that job for 11 months when I left for Florida. During that time I had noticed that I was having a problem with my right hip. After 2 days on the road and sleeping in hotels along the way I noticed that my hip was feeling better. I decided that I was going to get a good mattress when I got here. I went to Mattress Firm and got a great queen size mattress. I was shocked when I looked at the price of nearly $1200 for the set. The salesman then told me the set was 50% off. I bought it. I thought it was a great deal. I have not regretted it one bit. My hip still has it's moments but not the pain I suffered in NH. I love the pillow top.

Sorry I haven't been posting as usual but it's been due to circumstances beyone my control.

Funny, but I just bought a new bed and mattress. Fran and I had a gigantic four poster King and it just was getting too much for me to get up and into. I was shown one of those memory foam mattresses but no way I was getting one of them.....or so I thought.

I lay down on one and the guy said I wouldn't like it as it was memory foam. Maybe so but it was unlike any I'd ever stretched out upon but I couldn't take the heat they build up. He said I didn't have to. It had one of those gel envelopes that keep you cool. This was not to mention it was an electric bed with an upper works that raised and lowered with a little switch. Since I read voluminously, that was it. To boot, it was Queen sized as opposed to King so that I liked as well (less to make). I said I'd take it. It was not only on sale but they were involved in another promotion where they paid the sales tax! So I got a 1,600 dollar bed for a little under a grand and couldn't be happier. Of course the bedroom looks as if you could park a tractor trailer in it but ask me if I give a rat's patooie. Thus far, I've sept like the proverbial log. I'm right now looking forward to snuggling into it with my book and my three furry children. I do hope it continues to provide the happiness it has thus far.

Hope all your tests turned out alright Keith. All of you are, lest you forget, still in my nightly prayers.

I have a pillow-top and have laid a 3" memory foam on top of that. So nice!

Working at camps most of my life I have literally purchased thousands of foam mattresses. It seems the most comfortable normal foam mattress is at least 5" thick firm foam.

o.k., I'm way behind the times. What does "pillow top" mean? Built in pillow?

I'm in the market for a new mattress and need information! Have learned a lot from this post, but still not sure what "pillow top" means! (I'm a blond).

A pillow top is a mattress with a layer of soft "pillow like" padding on the top. This way you can have a soft mattress but still have firm support.

A couple of years ago I got rid of the worst mattress ever made. It was from the Original Mattress Factory. Within a year the pillow top started to indent and stay indented. The OMF told me that if it wasn't a permanent 2" indentation that didn't go away when I flipped it then they would replace it otherwise I was stuck with it. Well, we had to flip the huge king size mattress once a week or we felt like we were sleeping in a canyon and it really bothered both of our backs and hips. The OMF would not honor the warranty after two years, even when someone came out. The "inspector" really didn't like me when he left. I may have burned my own bridge because I did get pretty mad when he told me to keep "flipping" the mattress. I told him to flip it.

We then purchased a VERY expensive Select Comfort with adjustable head and leg. Sort of like a giant hospital bed. It's ok but not worth the money we paid. Next mattress is going to be a good old fashioned Sealy or other mattress.

Take care,
Mike

Pillow top mattresses are no flip as well as most mattresses now days, the quality seems to have really gone down with mattresses. I've gone through three mattresses since October and the one I did keep is still a little too soft. It seems they are just too hard or too soft, although they come extra firm, firm, cushion firm, plush and extra plush. You can find certain furniture stores that sell good old fashion two sided mattresses but you will pay a little extra however I think worth it.

For me firm is to hard for my hips but plush is to soft for my lower back....I guess that makes me Goldilocks?
