Default Johnny Carson Passes Away

Just heard on the news that Johnny Carson - my favorite TV host of all time - has passed away from emphysema at the age of 79.

I had just recently read that he had been supplying David Letterman with several jokes. So sad.

I just called my brother in Ca. to tell him the sad news and that he is out of a job. Johnny had 24 hr. security at his Malibu home and my retired brother worked part time at the estate in security. He knew he was hospitalized but didn't have the t.v. on. He always talked about what a fine and humble man he was.

I had just learned of this too! I feel like I lost someone that I grew up with. I used to sit up and watch him when I was raising my two girls, he was a nightly routine after a long day. Jay Leno is okay, but Johnny was so elegant!

I'll always remember him with a smile on his face. Think of all the smiles and laughs he gave us!

He was missed when he retired from the Tonight show and will certainly be missed now that he is gone. He was never cruel in his jokes and made people of all ages and walks of life laugh. I don't like Leno because many of his jokes are cruel instead of funny, especially the political ones on both sides.

I agree Jim - Johnny could make us laugh without being vulgar or nasty. He was a master of the the look and his body language and facial expressions were priceless. I have never gotten into Leno or others, sometimes watch Letterman, but even at my age I really missed Johnny when he retired. Like someone else on another board said, I went to bed with Johnny every night! <vbg> I used to sneak the small black and white tv in my room on just to see his monologue when I was supposed to be asleep - my parents finally gave up and let me stay up and watch it.

Since 4:30 p.m. today NBC, where the Tonight Show was broadcast, has had constant coverage and clips of his old shows. Like so many people, I was a big Carson fan. I was sorry when he retired and sorrier now that he died.

There are so many like Johnny Carson who cannot be replaced: George Burns, Milton Berle, Fred Allen. Always new types comeon, but it seems never as good as Carson and his ilk. Non can be replaced.

Johnny's passing leaves an emptiness that won't quite be filled. I also stayed up and watched him and remember the original night that the event happened that is shown in the clips-like Ed Ames and his ax throwing "exactness". I enjoyed watching him with Joan Embry from the San Diego zoo and the night that Dean Martin and others were on, and George Gobel stated his famous line -something like--"I feel like you're all the tuxedo and I'm the brown pair of shoes."
My son purchased one of Johnny's Tonight Show videos many years ago, which I still have. I have watched it off and on. Now, I'm REALLY glad I still have it.It is a real collector's item and a piece of history--and a piece of Johnny. Lynne (The next passing that will break my heart and make me realize that I'm all grown up is Dick Clark-when his time comes).
