Is it possible to get a free upgrade? On RCCL? How is the best way to go about doing this if it is possible...? On the ship or when we check in before we board? Thanks very much! - Voyager of the seas... 10 days!

Upgrades are at random...free. If you want to pay for an upgrade you can inquire at the pier....We received an upgrade from inside to a nice balcony on our last cruise<princess> The ship had 1000 less passengers due to the hurricane fiasko and we asked for a free upgrade. Book the cabin type you be happy with and this way you will enjoy your cruise.

Did you book a guarantee cabin? If so, it's possible you could get upgraded - and there's nothing you can do about it, it's up to the cruiseline. If you booked a specific cabin, you're stuck with that one - no upgrades possible.

Cheers,
Michelle P.

Michelle, i must disagree with you. If you book a specific cabin you can still get an upgrade if the ship isn't sold out. It has happened to my folks and my sister and brother-in-law.

Matt:
The best way to have a "chance" at having an upgrade is to book a "guarantee" cabin. This means that you book a cabin in the lowest category you would be happy with, i.e. outside or balcony. You may be upgraded to a higher category before sailing. Upgrades don't happen all the time. Some people have booked a dozen cruises and never been upgraded. It is sort of the gamble of cruising.

Cruise lines are supposed to ask before changing your cabin if you did not book a guarantee but, and it's a big but, it seems that some people are being upgraded from a specific cabin booking.

It has never happened to me and I would be livid if I booked with Carnival and booked an aft Cat 11 balcony and was "upgraded" to a Cat 12 midship.

Take care,
Mike
