Dollar or UK Pound
Having never sailed on an American cruise liner, my partner and I will be sailing on the Star in April 2005 - can't wait!!!!!

Do most people pay on board credit by credit card (3% charge??) or cash? Exchange rate at the moment is really good from UK Sterling to US Dollar, so I guess I'm answering my own question, if we pay cash do we have to leave a set amount a purser's desk, if so what is this set at? Anyone have any idea what exchange rate you are given in USA for UK Pound, can't decide wether to change it here at home or in Miami the day before we sail.

Great Forum, lots of advice that we have followed already, thanks everyone.

Dear Yvonne,

We were out in the states on a cruise and stay last Nov/Dec and the rate for sterling was excellent then - we were getting approx. $1.9 to the 1.00

Most people use credit cards - we certainly did with Carnival as this is used as your sail and sign card and when I finally paid the bill for the week, there was no extra 3% surcharge added to my card either.

Regarding whether you should do it here or there is up to you as the rates can change daily. We took some $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ with us and as I said used Credit Card. Most of our purchases came in at something around 1.9 or very close to it so the cards worked out well and of course, you do get the insurance element fixed into that as well.

Hope this helps and you have a good time.

The casinos charge a 3% surcharge when you get tokens, etc. through your sail and sign charge. Otherwise, everything else charged should be at the current exchange rate. Just have enough US dollars to pay for goodies at the ports of call.

Have a great time!

Re: Dollar or UK Pound
Put as much on cc as possible, you get the business exchange rate then, so lots of dollars to the pound!

Re: Dollar or UK Pound
Your credit card company will always give you the current exchange rate, so you don't have to worry about getting the best deal.

I agree with Thomas, put it on your CC to get the best rate. You will want a couple hundred in US Dollars for little things so get it changed at the bank before you get the the USA or find a local ATM machine and get money out of it. Exchange rate is crappy onboard ships usually as they are in airports.
