Default bon voyage party questions

I'm hosting a bon voyage party with corny cruise-like activities and need some help on the horse racing. I've not seen it in person, but I think I get the gist (sp?) of the game. Now, to help me orchestrate it can you tell me what makes it fun? Is there a MC with corny jokes along the way? We're going to have horses on sticks moving along a course in my living room. I can't think of a way to include betting that's not overly involved. What else can we do to make this fun?

Also, any goofy ideas for a simulated muster drill? We'll be using whatever swim rings/life preservers we have in the house. Wondering what to do/say to make it goofy and fun.

Also, I'm looking for names of well-known tv/movie characters related to cruising or water travel and am coming up short. Any suggestions?

Any other ideas are welcome. Thanks!
-Amy

Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr was "An Affair to Remember." My fellow hunkses will eject me from the great hall if they find out it's one of my favorite ship movies. So don't tell them!

Another good ship movie is a 1937 RKO Pictures release, "Shall We Dance." (Astaire and Rogers). The original features the lyrics and music of the Gershwin brothers. Do not confuse it with the recent Gere and Lopez ripoff of the title.

As far as a party muster, make it a version of musical chairs, using the Celine Dione (sp?) song from you know what movie. The chairs are the lifeboats. Participants wear waterwings, preservers, PFD's, whatever while marching around the lifeboats.

Since there's no edit feature on this forum, add this variation of musical chairs. March around the available flotation devices. Everybody grabs for one when the music stops. Eliminate one device each play. Whoever is has the last one wins!

There's also the "odd couple" Walter Mathau and Jack Lemmon who go on a cruise together as dance escorts. Can't remember the name of the movie, but it was funny.
Hey, you're party sounds like fun, can I come?

There is also a Jane Russell/Marilyn Monroe movie where they're on a cruise ship for part of it, I think it's Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend. And another with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye, Anything Goes.

RD, that movie is called "Out to Sea". We first saw it at my sisters the weekend before our last cruise, hilarious.

Thanks for all you suggestions everyone! I've decided to nix the idea of cruising movie characters, because only a couple people attending my party are classic film fans. I'll do workers on a cruise ship instead. (This is for a twist on a shower game where everyone gets a name on their back and they have to ask everyone else yes/no questions to figure out who they are.)

I still need some help with the horse racing. Any ideas? Even if you've just seen it done on a ship I'd appreciate your input, because I haven't. Thanks!

My husband thinks I'm nuts for doing this party, but I just think it will be a lot of silly fun.

Okay here's how the horse races work. They have 6 horses and a layout with about 10 horizontal lines on it. The MC throws 3 dice in a box and announces the numbers. If it were 2-2-3 then horse #2 would move 2 spots and #3 would move 1 spot, etc. The horses are usually named silly names and the MC chants their names as they go along.

The way you bet on it is to bet on any number from 1 to 6 ... about half way through they announce what the payout would be (ones that are heavily bet would win less than those that aren't). Good luck ... cute idea!

Our Bon Voyage party had a small wading pool filled with ice to cool the food that needed refrig., and another for beer. We put up signs to name the decks. The outside deck was of course "Panarama Deck" and the bathroom...you guessed it "Poop Deck".
We played the hula hoop game, and musical deck chairs. A nice mix of music from Titanic, and cruising music..anything from Proud Mary to Island Music. Our guest like to dress up, we had everything from the Hawaiian shirts and shorts, grass skirts and coconut bras, to a "Titanic Survivor" with her fox collar and hat.

I am sure you will have fun ...We sure did.!
