Hi there,

Just wondered how many of you watch American Idol. Here in the U.K., hubs and I are really hooked (maybe its Simon's influence!!!) and it is always shown over here on Friday evenings.

Have to say, I don't think this year's 'crop' seems to have as much talent as last year. I mean Fantasia was brilliant as was LaToyah London last year. I think Constantine seems to have the edge, so it does get more interesting each week to see who gets thru though.

The one person that really does irk though is that Ryan Seacrest - seems there is no love lost between him and our Simon Cowell though.

American voters are voting in their droves so there must be some of you CM's out there that watch this too.

I consider Idol as well as all other reality shows another insidous attempt by the media to rot the American brain.

We watch it every week. In fact, we actually got to go to a concert of the final 10 from last year. The concert was actually better than I thought it would be!!

My guess is that Carrie will be the winner. My favorites are Anthony and Constantine. I also think that Anwar is awesome. On the other hand, I'm guessing that Scott Savol will be out, due to the press about him beating up his ex-girlfriend. Very sad because he has a beautiful voice.

I have to admit I am an Idol junkie, I have watched it from season one, and I personally think that this year is much better than the others. We moved into our new house this weekend, and my satillite is all messed up. All the local channels are gone, so no Fox!! My loving wonderful husband just went and bought me an el-cheapo antenna for me so I can watch it tomorrow!

GO CARRIE!!

Ok so the truth is, I am a reality TV junkie... it all started with Real World on MTV... then Big Brother.... sure it rots my brain, but I love it!

I swore I wouldn't watch it, but I'm afraid I'm hooked too. Not a great bunch this year, but I really think Anwar looks like MY idol, Barry Gibb! I know that's ridiculous, since Anwar is Black, with dreadlocks, but there's something about his smile, his eyes, his nose, and his mannerisms that remind me of Barry. Too bad he doesn't sing as well though...

My very favorite is Constantine, but I also like Anwar and Anthony. I think Carrie is the best of the females. "The Amazing Race" is my favorite reality show. Am getting bored with "Survivor" and "Apprentice".

Thanks for your response - glad to see I am not alone!!!

With regard to rotting the 'brian' I can understand that view when it comes down to so called reality shows.

We all know they are basic rubbish, but somehow however many times you say to yourself 'I am not going to watch that', you do!

Over here, we have our own Big Brother, Get me out of here I'm a celebrity (all classification 'D' rated celebs!!), Apprentice (with Sir Alan Sugar NOT Donald Trump) Survivor etc.

However, with shows like American Idol and the X Factor, I like to think that it is supposed to be more like a talent show rather than a bunch of 'd' rated celebs or general joe public making fools of themselves. Obviously, there are the cringe moments when some of the singers really bomb their notes (like Michekella kept doing) and of course, when the judges start squabbling at each other. Simon may appear to be mean at times, but he has proven that he knows what he is talking about having made millions out of record deals and at times, Paula can be just too sweet as she is so scared to offend.

Rollerdonna - I agree with you re Anwar and the resemblance to Barry Gibb - very smouldering. However, I feel he lacks that special edge to win.

For me , Carrie does have an excellent voice but is too much country music focused to become what I would class an 'Idol'. I think she still needs to show that she is able to sing and perform any type of musicstyle to achieve that covetted award.

At least with Constantine, even though he is a 'rocker' at heart, he has been able to show that he can perform ballads, the Partridge FAmily etc. and can deviate from his original muscial vogue.

Dear Partyanimal - that is a shame you cannot get Eastenders over there now. I too really love it even though I have to be totally honest, it is really nothing like what British life is today - it may have rung true 50 years ago but times have moved on. However, for us at 7.30 each evening, it is easy viewing whilst relaxing after a hard day's work as you just know that people just don't live like that anymore.

BTW, is Fantasia doing well after her win last year - don't hear of her over here in Britain?

I'm hooked on AI as well. I think Carrie and Bo have the best voices in the group. Anwar is a sweetie but unfortunately I don't think his voice is good enough to make it to the end. Constantine has charisma and stage presence but I don't care for his voice that much.

We're hooked as well. My favorites are Bo, Carrie, Anwar, and Nadia. Call me silly but I don't really like Constantine. To me he gives off a bit of a creepy vibe.

When I was 20 I would have been all about Constantine, but I've known too many rockers just like him who are way too into their image. I see that in him every time he sings, and it annoys me.He can sing, though. (Have you listened to his band's music online? You'd never know Constantine can actually sing from it as it's all screaming and cursing. I'm a rock chick at heart, but I don't understand music like that.) Anyway, everyone left on AI now is excellent, but not all in the same genre, so it'll be difficult to pick a single winner from the bunch. BTW, I'm surprised no one here has mentioned Nadia or Vonzell. They're both amazing vocalists. And, Anwar is quite possibly the most beautiful man I've ever seen. Wow. <g>

Here, Here. Thought exactly the same but didn't want to start going off thread. Having a husband who is ex military (Guards Regiment), I know if I was caught up in some major conflict and both U.S. and British Intelligence were involved, I know exactly which one I would put my faith in.

i am also hooked on idol. Last night was amazing. Show tunes, Carrie almost made me cry, same for Nadia. The two weakest performances came from Scott and Anthony still not sure about Nikko - think he is to R & B for Idol. Loved Constantines take on "My Funny Valentine"

Yes he can evoke that sort of emotion - I think he believes he needs to be honest but doesn't seem to know how about saying what he feels with any diplomacy and sensitivity.

The difference is he is looking at the contestants as how they would venture in the cut throat 'dog eat dog world' of the music industry which he does have tremendouse experience of and not to be there to be kind to their egos. I suppose its a term of being cruel to be kind in the end.

On the X Factor over here in the U.K. (along with Sharon Osbourne as one of the judges), he made it quite clear that the contestants were not to become chummy and were to be very competitive against each other to ensure that they were hungry to win. He made it quite clear on the programme that he didn;t want them all to be hugging each other like American Idol but to be very fierce and competitive instead. This did make for very compulsive viewing I must say and you could see the fire in the eyes of the last 3 contestants as they battled it out.

Believe me, even over here in Britian, we find him quite ruthless but do understand where he is coming from.
