Default Back from Bermuda cruise...short review...good and bad...

Just back from Bermuda cruise on the Celebrity Horizon.....here is my short review.
Food...good
Waiters and bar staff...good
fellow cruisers...good
Things to do on ship...boreing
Ship....old, and too small, never will I sail a small old ship no matter what cruise line it is.
Bermuda....everything too expensive, people on island kinda rude, and places to see boreing. Spent 4 days in same port of Hamilton...ugh...like the carribbean much better, for lots of reasons.
Some say Celebrity is a step above Royal Carribbean and Carnival...I say NO WAY.

Sounds disappointing MM, I hope you at least enjoyed some good weather?

To each their own......but the reason I am not so keen on going to Bermuda is that you really do sit in the same place for days and NOT cruise!

On Bermuda cruises you really have to want to "see" Bermuda. Other than travel time, the ships are really just hotels... so not a true cruising experience.

Oh yeah forgot weather....rain and cool....ugh
Also hit rough very rough seas going to Bermuda...half ship sick! Our room rocked and rolled all the way, and our drawers and doors flew open all night long with the rocking. I sure screwed up and forgot the duct tape!!!!

Was the ship clean and in good repair despite its being old and small?

Cheers,
Michelle P.

Sorry to hear you were disappointed .
Horizon is actually one of my favorate ships and Bermuda is probably my favorate cruise destination. I actually like the small ship and find the "options" available to be just enough. Overnights in Hamilaton allow you to explore the whole country from St George to Kings Wharf and everthing in between.
On the nights in Bermuda, the stores casinos etc on board are closed and the entertainment is kept, by agreement with the Bermuda Gov't , to a minimum (they want you to get off and find local entertainment at the pubs and clubs).
It's interesting how folks can have different perspectives. Mary Margaret found it boring,
I find it has so much to do you can't get it all in. I don't golf but there are 13 courses. There is some of the best diving and snorkelling available anywhere. Sailing, fishing , glass bottom boating are options. Great beaches accessable from any port by bus or taxi. Some of my favorates are St Catherine's , Achilles Bay, Horseshoe , Jobsons (and all the beaches along that coast). Sightseeing from Aquarium, to Botanical Gardens, to lighthouses, museums, beaches, and even a grand cathedral. (anybody ever climb the inside spiral stairs to the roof, highest point in Bermuda and views are unbelievable).
We love the upscale shopping for things like woolens and linens.
My experiences with local peopleis that they are friendly and the island is a safe as anywhere on earth.
We got to know a local vendor providing snorkel trips and they were the first folks to contact us after 9/11 to make sure our family was ok. They also run the best snorkel tour I have ever taken.
How great to take a horsedrawn carraige ride for 1/2 hour before sunset, then go back on board for dinner, then back out to a pub for a dark and stormy and some local entertainment.
For those who might not be aware, Horizon will be retired at the end of the Bermuda season, to be refitted and sail under a european affiliate of RCCL, with a new name.
Bermuda is certainly a "different" cruise experience, and obviously , not for everyone.

Just returned from our 12th visit to Bermuda ... (on May 8 on the Majesty.).....and I agree with the previous poster!!!!!!.There is so much to see and do there!!!..we always have felt safe there no matter where we have gone ..have done the beaches.. lighthouse, caves, museums, aquarium,. botanical garden. pubs.. including the Rum Swizzle Inn!!.....even mopeds....have yet to do the horsedrawn carriage though...that will be another visit...Bermuda is certainly our favorite spot..and we get a bit of cruising at the same time....what could be better??
But guess it really up to one's preferences...

I agree with you on your point that the Horizon is a boring ship, with limited offerings compared to larger vessels. Some people seem to like her that way, however.

I would be willing to give Celebrity another try, just not on Horizon or Zenith. And yes, she was really moving with the seas on our cruise as well, a 10 day circle the Caribbean back in 1999.

PEOPLE IN BERMUDA RUDE!!!! It may have been your attitude... I find they are very english, helpful, polite and willing to go out of their way to do things for you.. As for expensive...it certainly is... I realize from what another cruise last week on another ship told me that the crossing weather was not pleasant. As for me, I'll take a smaller ship if it's going to where I want to go. There is so much to see in Bermuda that we haven't seen it all in ten times.. Bermudians actually treat tourists as visitors to their country, not as pests who come off the ship and shop.... Can't wait to go back for our 11th time next year
