Default Poll: What Got You Started On Your First Cruise

And how would your life be different if you hadn't?

Our first cruise was a Bingo themed cruise on the Carnival Ecstacy in 1993. I don't play Bingo and I don't much like getting dressed up, but Peggy dragged me, under protest on to the ship. Now, twenty cruises later, with two booked, I make her march up the gang plank every chance I get.

Incidentally, on that first cruise, we paid more for an outside cabin than we would have to pay for a balcony cabin on the same itinerary now.

If we hadn't cruised over the years since 1993, we would probably have had more than $100,000 more to spend on other things such as trips to Europe and Australia. However, since our cruises have included visits to both areas as well as many others, cruising has proven to be the better course of action.

For what it is worth, I wouldn't have written any cruise poetry nor conversed with the wonderful people who post on this board.

Paul<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<who only regrets that he hadn't started cruising earlier.

My first cruise was in 1997 for my 40th birthday. I had tried for 20 years to get my hubby on a cruiseship, but he wasn't having it! But, the 40th birthday and losing a dear friend to cancer in 1997 was pretty stressful, so he finally gave in. Since that time, we've cruised 9 times and have #10 booked. My life would be very different had we never cruised. I would not have met some of my dearest friends without cruising. I would have never found Cruisemates where many of those friends come from. I'm so thankful we started cruising and like Paul, I only wish we would have started sooner.

After DH's parents both died w/in 8 days of each other in spring of '03, I started looking for a nice trip for us to take in the fall. Just couldn't find anything we both agreed on or that fitted both our schedules. Finally a friend said that the local stitch shop had someone cancel out on a cruise they were sponsoring w/ a well-known teacher. Frankly, we had never considered cruising as DH is prone to motion-sickness and I hate crowds. But we are really fond of Tracey, the shop-owner and fell in love w/ her mother who is a cruise and condo specialist TA.... so we booked our 1st cruise. Had an absolute ball even tho I brought that year's flu on board w/ me. We have been trying to go on another one ever since....... between family obligations and health problems it just hasn't worked out. This morning DH booked us on an Ohio River barge cruise Oct. 26-Nov.2. Best we could do this year..... be sure CMs will get a full report. DH is becoming increasingly intrigued w/ Rock the Locks so I'm hoping we will soon be stacked.

A good friend was the leader of a cruise for foreign exchange students. She originated the cruise and did it every year for the new students each year. She asked us to go with them. The price was right. We asked my cousin to go with us also. So the four of us started the tradition. That was 1994... Now our group we travel with every other year is up to 13 of our family members. Our sixth cruise is booked for april 2006. Our first 2 cruises were on the Premiere lines. Oceanic was the ship we did 2 yrs in a row. After that we didnt do the cruise with the students anymore and looked into our own group. so we started with Carnival. We love Carnival. our 4th coming up. Cruising is in our blood. We spend lots of time planning and researching our ports of call. So it is like we are cruising more often. This will be our first time with a balcony room. We have always gone inside cabins. So we are all excited like its a new venture. Happy cruising to all!

After WWII, 1946, we had the priviledge of cruising out of New Orleans on a ship called Edelin. It was a wonderful 7 dayer. That got us started. We love the oceans and seas and the warmth of life aboard a Cruise Ship along with the many exotic places and ports we have visited.

The TV Commercials for Premier Cruise lines back in the early 1990's when they were affilated with Disney looked interesting. I wanted to do one so I booked a Premier cruise for my then husband's birthday, which is odd--- that today 05/17 is his birthday and I am writing this reply. We both loved the cruise, but less than a year latter I was divorced and didn't take my second cruise until December 2001 as a 41st birthday present to myself!!

We are big Star Trek fans. In 1995 there was a themed cruise with the stars of the show on board. It was on the Celebration and went to Porto rico, Virgin Islands, St. Martin. After we got off in Miami, the ship left again and somewhere east of Florida caught fire. Wow, that was a close one. We debated if we would go again, but the next year another Star Trek cruise came up and we were hooked. Although we don't always go with them, we love cruising any time. I have loved the ocean since my parents first took me on a cruise up the Potomac River. It really gets in your blood.
Next one coming up in 10 days. this will be our longest and most expensive trip. Here is the Itinerary: Fly to Salt lake city, take a tour bus thru 5 national parks in the north west, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Brice, Olympia, Cascades,Grand Coolee dam, then cruise the inside passage for 7 days on the Volendam.
Next year will be the Panama Canal. Don't stop me now!!

Ellis and I saw a really good price for a 5 day cruise on Emerald Seas in 1980. Although i had thoughts of sea sickness and man over board, not being able to swim to save myself. !! turns out to have changed our lives. It took 14 years to get to go back to another cruise, 1994, Norway had just been refurbished and so we decided, kids are grown and we had dreamed of going on the Norway for 14 years. Now its once or twice and sometimes three times a year we are cruising. It definitely has changed our lives and has given us freedom to travel without too much trouble since Ellis has become disabled. Enjoying the company of people who like the same thing we do, and willl have a countdown clock running forever!

In 1993, I was a poor, struggling, single mother raising 2 kids on a daycare teacher's salary. Vacation meant 2 weeks a year of not working. Who could afford to go anywhere? Then, I met James. James has the sea in his blood I think. He had done a Costa cruise many years before, and always wanted to cruise again, but only with "someone special". Well, apparently, I was "Special" enough, and he took me on my first cruise in Jan.95 on the Nordic Empress. I didn't want to cruise - I get motion sickness in a car! But miraculously, I was not sick, nor have I ever been sick since, on a ship. I felt very out of place, out of my league, on that fancy ship, with the well dressed people and fancy food. But then something happened. I fell in love with cruising, and even more in love with James, and I told him, if we ever get married, we HAVE to cruise on our honeymoon! And in 2001, we did just that, on the Maasdam, and I was hooked all over again. Since then, we've been on 4 Carnival cruises, and have a Princess CM cruise booked for next year, but I have to admit, I've got the cruiseitis bug real bad now and don't think I can wait that long!

donna (who is also very thankful for finding CruiseMates and for all the wonderful people here who have become part of my everyday life!)

My first cruise was in 1993 on a honeymoon. I fell in love with cruising, a love that burns brighter every day. I dumped the husband (he hated it), but made sure my next husband loved cruising as much as I do. We have gone on 7 or 8 more together.

What Got You Started On Your First Cruise?

I don't know why, but I had wanted to go on a cruise ever since I could remember, and I finally was able to do so in October 1995. My cousin and I went on the Carnival Fascination, southern Caribbean itinerary out of San Juan, Puerto Rico. We went on Carnival because it had the most reasonable prices and she was hard to convince to part with all that money. That cruise in an outside cabin in 1995 cost us more than the same cruise would today with airfare thrown in! We went on that itinerary because it went the farthest away from home and we figured it might be our only chance to go to some of those places. I wanted to be able to say I had been in South America with our stop in Venezuela.

How would your life be different if you hadn't?

Well.... those of you who are long-time Cruise Mates already know my story, but there might be some newbies here who don't. On that first cruise, I met the man who was to become my husband. He was our waiter, his name is Jose, and he is from Costa Rica. My flawless pronunciation of his last name led him to ask me if I spoke Spanish. Upon learning that I do, Jose took a few minutes to chat with me in Spanish at each meal, and we began to form a connection. After the cruise was over, we stayed in constant touch, he came to Arizona to visit me and to get to know each other better, I took another cruise on the Inspiration, his next contract, and we were married in Costa Rica on January 1, 1997. So... how would my life be different? I wouldn't have this wonderful man in my life and I wouldn't have 5 wonderful children and a bunch of beautiful grandchildren in Costa Rica. I wouldn't have met all the wonderful people I have through Cruise Mates. Going on the first Let's Get Lei'd Cruise to Hawaii with CM in 2002 has led to so many true friendships that my life is completely different than it would have been had I not stepped foot on that first ship.

edited to add:
Jose and I didn't go on to have 5 children together. The 5 children in Costa Rica that I gained from this marriage are his kids from his first marriage, and I love them as if they were my own.

I was at work one day in 1982 and heard 2 ladies talking about a cruise. I said wow!! that sounds like fun. They invited me to a talk with a TA at one of their homes. I went. Before I left there I deposited on the cruise. We went on the cruise the next February 1983 on the Festivale. Back then I did not know anything about cruise pricing and for a cat4A we paid book price. Of course back then air was included in the book price. No upgrade either and we had 3 in the room. Interesting that here it is 22 years later, I am going on the Glory I booked a 4A GTY and with the air, transport from Orlando to the hotel in Port Canaveral and the hotel and insurance I have spent less than that first cruise.
