Default Labor dispute in Alaska: Longshoremen vs. Carnival

The Longshoreman's union claims that the cruiselines are taking jobs away from Americans by using foreign workers to load and unload luggage from the ships. A group tried to prevent a busload of cruisers from boarding the Spirit in Whittier, but was unsuccessful and arrested.

The law requires cruiselines to use American workers in U.S. ports to load and unload ships, but Carnival says they don't have to use U.S. workers to move the luggage onboard the ships.

Cheers,
Michelle P.

Good luck with that stuff. The Unions pretty much killed the Port of Baltimore years ago. The joke then was they were the longshoreman who wouldnt work in the rain. Now most stuff comes in down in Norfolk, Va. The shipyards that cranked out like one liberty ship a day during WWII are pretty much closed up also. They do off-load a large number of cars in B-more though but they just kind of drive them off so I guess that doesnt really count.
