Default Just Thought......

Just thought you might be interested in this..I got it from a friend today and seems as though we are in for quite the treat. If you are booked on a cruise along this time, it will really be a special event ....so here is the info.

The Red Planet is about to be spectacular! This month and next, Earth is
catching up with Mars in an encounter that will culminate in the closest
approach between the two planets in recorded history. The next time Mars may
come this close is in 2287. Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on Mars
and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be certain that Mars has not
come this close to Earth in the Last 5,000 years, but it may be as long as
60,000 years before it happens again.

The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within
34,649,589 miles of Earth and will be (next to the moon) the brightest
object in the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9 and will appear
25.11 arc seconds wide. At a modest 75-power magnification

Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. Mars will be easy
to spot. At the beginning of August it will rise in the east at 10p.m. and
reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m.

By the end of August when the two planets are closest, Mars will rise at
nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30a.m. That's pretty
convenient to see something that no human being has seen in recorded
history. So, mark your calendar at the beginning of August to see Mars grow
progressively brighter and brighter throughout the month.

Share this with your children and grandchildren. NO ONE ALIVE TODAY WILL
EVER SEE THIS AGAIN

BigJohn:

I thought long and hard if I should tell you but I figured I had to. This happened in 2003. The emails are still circulating or are being updated to give it new, but non-factual, life.

In October Mars will be relatively close to Earth but it will be about 20% smaller than in August of 2003.

It was really cool in 2003 and anything astronomical is still cool now..

Take care,
Mike

Thanks for straightening that out Mike. I got the same e-mail yesterday, and was looking forward to August, but figured I'd probably forget the date by then anyway!!
Maybe I saw it in 2003 and don't remember that either!

Donna,
I was pretty big news. The Mars rovers, successful and unsuccessful, landings were done at that time because of how close Mars was to Earth. There were even tabloid stories about how the closeness of Mars would cause tidal effects and earthquakes here on Earth.

I was out every night looking through my telescope at Mars and while it was beautiful our Minnesota weather were pretty bad when Mars was at it's closest so I didn't see it when it was at its best.

Take care,
Mike

Thomas,
I have a pretty powerful refractor telescope and have been into armature astronomy for many years. I have had to curtail my viewing since I have suffered partial blindness. It happened in a freak accident near Jacksonville, Florida. I was looking at the Orion Nebula when I stumbled and the telescope shifted and the next thing I was looking at was the bedroom of a man in his under shorts and a Michelob in his hands. Luckily there was a dachshund in the field of vision otherwise I would have suffered total blindness. <VBG>

Take care,
Mike(Having some fun with Thomas)
