Brown eggs or white eggs?
Just wondering about eggs. I have never in my life bought a brown egg. Is there a difference in brown eggs taste or freshness?
Should I try some brown eggs?

Re: Brown eggs or white eggs?
Definitely. We love the brown eggs. We go to a special grocery store that has them farm fresh every Sunday.

Brown eggs are the usual here in New England. The stores do carry white eggs but for the life of me I cannot tell the difference in taste. I do remember an advertising campaign for brown eggs.It was something about brown eggs are local eggs, local eggs are fresh.

Re: Brown eggs or white eggs?
I usually buy organic eggs, and they are always brown, at least in our local stores they are. I notice no difference in taste. The only time I buy white is for coloring at Easter Time.

There is a jingle about brown eggs in New England.."Brown eggs are local eggs, and local eggs are fresh!" We also have white eggs to buy....There is NO difference in taste to me.

Re: Brown eggs or white eggs?
My wife allways buys brown eggs. I asked why and she didn't have any answer.

Probably, out of habit.

On our recent European cruise all they had were brown eggs. I really didn't notice a taste difference... and on the Atkins diet, I was eating a fair number of omelets and hard boiled eggs.

Re: Brown eggs or white eggs?
There is a major difference between brown and white eggs: The color. It all depends on the breed of the chicken from which the egg came from. It really depends on what you feed the chicken and the condition of the hen that controls the taste and quality of the egg. The color makes no difference and don't believe anything positive or negative based on the color.

The old adage that brown eggs come from brown birds is not quite true. You actually have to look at the feathers by their ear holes to know if they will give white or brown eggs.

We used to have some Plymouth Rocks and Leghorns when I was a kid and the Rocks were used for stewing hens and the Leghorns for fryers and layers. The Rocks were brown but they were larger and ate more. The eggs were a bit larger but tasted the same. I suspect that commercial egg producers found that it cost more to feed brown egg chickens so they used the smaller variety and charged more for brown eggs.

My mother grew up in England and while she didn't see an egg for almost six years, during rationing, she almost always saw brown eggs until she came to the U.S.

Take care,

Are Egg Benedict from a hen named Benedict? That can't be, the rooster muct have been named Benedict.

Brown or white, that's the only way I eat them.

Re: Brown eggs or white eggs?
why does" Foghorn Leghorn and the widow hen's inquisitive smart son " come to my mind while I was reading this... I can hear Foghorn say to the smart son ' I say, I say there now son, brown eggs come from brown hens and white eggs come from white hens" (VBG)..whatever happen to great cartoon characters like Foghorn ? Back in the day, you could learn alot about life by watching Looney Tune cartoons

Re: Brown eggs or white eggs?

I loved Foghorn, "The Widder" and the little guy who wanted to be a "Chicken Hawk". Those were all great characters.

BTW: There are brown leghorns and they lay white eggs. <VBG>

Take care,

Our eggs are only sorted by size.
They all taste the same to me.

Re: Brown eggs or white eggs?

Re: Brown eggs or white eggs?
now that would be a neat theme for a new thread..your favorite cartoon characters would fill various roles on a cruise ship (exlcude the disney characters)..

Foghorn Leghorn - captain
Yosimite Sam - purser desk
Speedy Gonzalez- head waiter
Tweety Bird - shore excursion desk
Chip & Dale - room stewards
Daffy Duck - shipboard lecturer
Elmer Fudd - cruise director
Pepe Lepew - shipboard doctor and resident male host dancer, companion
Tasmanian Devil- head bartender

God I love those looney tune characters..hey Trip if you hit the lottery you can pay for my next cruise

rollerdonna June 19th, 2005 08:28 PM

Re: Brown eggs or white eggs?
I WUV the idea of Elmer Fudd as Cwuise Diwector!!

Re: Brown eggs or white eggs?
Granny gets my vote as Social Hostess and Bug Bunny as your Cruise Director. <VBG>

Venice: Sorry, true Leghorns (white or dark) only lay white eggs. :-) But you can have a mixed breed that could lay a brown egg.

Take care,
Mike (Chicken genetics, breeding, poultry farms, how crappy (true) free range eggs taste and the poultry industry in general were topics of conversation with my daughter, a Vet, at Father's Day dinner. Exciting huh?) <VBG>

Re: Re: Brown eggs or white eggs?
Yes here in England, you don't very often see white eggs, all including organic are brown over here.

To me, I am sure eating a white egg would seenm very odd but I am certain that most probably there is not much difference..

Next time I am in the States, will have to try a white one.

Re: Brown eggs or white eggs?
Mike you are eggsactly right.

I do not notice any difference eggsept for the color. But I don't think I see the brown eggs in the store as much. Could be the eggstreme heat here in Florida makes the brown foul fly to Canada for the summer.
