Default Security screening question (Mini DV tapes)

I have a question for all you "seasoned" travelers. Will those mini DV tapes go thru the checked luggage screening without a problem or is it better to take them in carry on's
Here's my delima--I can fit the video camera in with our camera so we'll only have to have 1 camera bag carry on--(I'll put the video bag in with our checked luggage) but i wanted to know about the tapes. I know you can't put regular film thru the checked luggage but i wondered about magnetic tapes. This is a digital video camera that records on mini DV tapes. Thank you. This would be for both AIRLINE screening and cruiseline.

I have those mini dv tapes and never had a problem taking them through the screening. Actually, I take all our cameras and valuable in my carry on. Don't like them in our luggage as you hear more and more about valuables stolen from the luggage handlers.

I specifically show them our video camera and they say they'll be fine. Many airports I've found like to take them from me and open them up and make sure there's nothing in there that shouldn't. Then they put them on the belt to be x-rayed......

You should be fine with both the airline and cruise screening.

Have a wonderful time!

The cameras etc. will be taken with me--I was just wondering about the tapes as i was planning on keeping them with the other bag that i was going to put in checked luggage.--nothing of real value would be checked--just the blank tapes and the camera bag--the cameras would go in the other bag that we'd carry on.

Security screening in your checked luggage will not effect your mini DV tapes in the slightest. No film in the checked luggage however.

Thanks so much--i knew about the film but didn't for the tapes. This will help alot since i can fit the video camera bag in another suitcase and carry the camera on the plane with me. Thanks again.

They told us that it wouldn't effect the tapes but it did. I now have them handchecked.

Darcy, there is no way that xrays used for scanning can effect your tapes. Can't happen, period. Something else , heat, magnetic exposure, bad tapes or damaged camera damaged your tapes. The is nothing that xrays can do to effect magnetic tape.
