Default Question for our Canadian Mates about tipping in Canada.....

I know from reading these boards that tipping is sometimes viewed differently in Canada and other areas of the world than it is in the USA.

I am going to Quebec on October 1st and will be taking a taxi from the airport to my hotel, probably having the bellhop take my luggage to my room, have a couple of meals at the hotel or nearby restaurants, take a carriage ride, take a taxi to the pier and hand my luggage over to the porters at the pier. Is it customary to tip tour operators and porters? What about bellhops and waiters at the restaurants? I don't want to offend anyone by either tipping or not tipping and would like to know in advance so I don't feel like a dunce!

Thanks in advance!

Hey Lisa
Heather would know-- I know she told me that they dont tip as much as we do out here in the states-well most of us anyways-- this was also mentioned while I was in Victoria a few weeks ago----

Cheers
April

There's an old joke about what the difference is between a Canadian and a Canoe.

A canoe will tip! <G>.... BUT being Canadian I can tell you that tipping is pretty much standard. At restaurants between 15 and 20%. A couple of bucks for bellhops, porters etc.

Thanks, Kuki! Just what I needed to know. I suppose American dollars are ok?

I would tip in Canadian dollars.

When I waitressed in the US, I hated when people tipped in Canadian dollars. Same thing.

Tipping here in Canada is exactly the same as in the U.S. - I always tip in the local currency when travelling.

In this case I don't see any problem with tipping in US dollars. The U.S. dollar is worth more, and it's easy enough to convert if those who receive it want to.

Thanks, Kuki - that is what I was thinking, with the exchange rate and all...........but I will make sure I have some Canadian dollars handy when I arrive in Quebec.

One thing I found in Quebec was the language thing. I asked for a glass of water but couldn't remember the French word for water - now I knew the waiter understood English very well but he pretended he didn't and never did bring my water. That's ok because he never did get his tip! I don't drink tea or coffee so the water was essential.

We found that it was wise to print out the name of the hotel and anywhere else we were going in case the taxi driver did not speak English. Of course if you are fluent in French you will have no trouble at all.

Hi, I am american but I live in Canada (for 18 years being married to a french canadian). You are quite right about tipping. I was born and raised in Manhattan (NY) and when I go there I always do the tipping instead of the hubby.

It's a well known fact that most americans tip much better than canadians. I live in a touristy part of the town (Montreal) and with my still recognized accent, people think they will get a bigger tip.

Yes, all the people you mentioned will expect and want a tip, it's just a bit lower than what you would tip in the US. On resto bills 15% is considered very very good. Keep in mind also that if they know you are american they will automatically expect you to tip. For everything else I would tip as you would in the USA and you would be fine. Basically that's what I do, I tip close to what I do in NYC except on the resto bills, I lower the tip to 15%
I hope you enjoy your trip
