The American Red Cross announced Tuesday that it is opening a shelter in Austin for Hurricane Katrina evacuees who will not be able to return home for days.
Hurricane victims fled the Gulf Coast over the past several days, and many ended up at local hotels and motels. Some said that rooms were already packed in cities like Beaumont and Houston.
Red Cross officials stated in a press release that the shelter will be at the Toney Burger center on U.S. Highway 290 West in Sunset Valley. The building is a special-events athletic facility operated by A.I.S.D.
According to officials, about 160 people called them to request shelter by Tuesday afternoon. Some had said that they were running low on funds to pay for hotel rooms.
Anyone from the hurricane stricken area who needs shelters should call the local American Red Cross at 877-929-1224.
