I just went shopping at Walmart and they are sold out of almost all water(all one gallon sizes) and many other items need restocking. I know some is from school going back (like shoes)and a holiday weekend but I imagine many people bought for a Katrina drive put on by the radio station. I was just surprised to see this because I am up in the north.
WalMart does not employ the standard central-warehouse model of marketing. They employ drop-shipping on a massive scale to cut costs. That means when the shelves go bare, they order up what they need directly from the supplier, who rapidly ships it to the stores, skippimg any central warehouse. If the supplier is out, so is Wal-Mart.
This can be both a blessing and a curse to the world's biggest retailer....
