Default Paw Prints on the Heart

With little Suzie just passing on to dog heaven, I thought I'd share a poem I enjoy. Someone wrote this for a friend.

Paw Prints on the Heart
A head is turned to hear a routine
inspection of the house now silent,
expectant with an ear tuned
to his presence-panting, breathing,
anticipating a walk, a treat, an
absent-minded ear scratch.
At times it was an obbligato
snore to the tune of a television
show or talking on the phone.
From puppy love until the end,
a gift of mutual understanding.
An imparting of parental
prerogative and insistence of
natural forces comprising
the will of each into a better blend
of both-at times maternal,
at times a concerned family
drawn closer to a loved one’s
sick bed, at times mere humans
drawn close to nature observing
the beauty, the beast, the best
of a four legged friend.
And when the time of
togetherness is past,
there remains a sweet
presence of the gift of
that time together and
what it all means to
have a Buddy who left
such paw prints on the heart
but now leaps for joy and runs
bounding across an open field.

Almost too sad to reply to. Our beloved Siamese dies about three years ago, and my DH and I still miss him.

I can relate, we have lost two beloved pets in the past two years, first my grumpy old tabby cat Missy who was 11 and our gentle little Himilayan princess Smudge who was only 4. They come into our lives, steal our hearts and leave us all too soon.

So sad that poem, but so true. I almost lost my Emma twice in her puppyhood, and it was SO difficult. She's healthy now, but I dread the day when she is not....
