Every year I manage to get qualified for a local radio contest as a finalist but as yet, I've never won the grand prize. You have to punch out numbers on a punch board from 1 to 120 and they're giving away two $10,000 shopping sprees at the mall (where the contest is being held) and one cruise for two. The catch with the shopping spree is; you have to spend it from about 2 PM to 6 PM, when the mall closes and you can't go buy gift certificates from a store, it has to be merchandise. Well, this new mall in our city has just about every kind of store you can imagine. It also has a travel agency where, (if I could just get lucky this time) I could go to and buy an expenisve cruise. It would probably be my first stop if I were to win the $10,000. I've always wanted to cruise to Australia and New Zealand, but haven't been able to afford it as yet.
I was just wondering....WHAT WOULD YOU BUY IF YOU HAD A $10,000 SHOPPING SPREE? If you don't get it spent by the time the mall closes at 6PM, you lose the remainder of the money. I know this wouldn't be a problem for the ladies....we could probably get it spent in an hour or less. Also, this mall has a wonderful new jewelry store that has the most fabulous things in the world. I guess you know where my two stops would be....where would yours be?
PS My DH doesn't agree with me, but he's not in the finals for this contest.
For the guys, the mall has a very big sporting goods store called Scheels.
Well, I'd probably hit that agency and buy several cruises !
However, I think I'd buy a 2'ish carat solitare mens diamond ring. I keep looking and just don't do it! For some reason, with all the jewelry I have, I have always wanted a single stone diamond (that is 'large').
I would give it all to charity, saves on the taxes. I don't have to decide on what to buy. simple and fast. I know of a group of nurses that won 13 mil. in the florida lotto. They kept there jobs and gave most to a worthy cause.
Trekker, I see you've done away with the need for accumulation of weath and material items, I will call my law firm and let them know that I'm alive and well, my stock will have split enough times to buy a cruise ship (all of you SERIOUS trekkers out there will know what that means)
Seriously, I would buy a 2 ct. Vs1 G colour diamond for wifey, or, I would go to the travel agency and put deposits on 5 cruises.
(can you tell I've been researching wifey's next gift)

I would go to the bank in the mall and buy a CD for the $10 grand. Let it mature and grow.
Many people mistakenly believe buying diamonds is a good investment. Ha! They want to tell you how the resale value of diamonds is so good that it's a good investment. But the reality is: the huge majority of diamonds are not resold! They are passed down through the generations so the value is lost. And the others are traded in on larger diamonds that won't be resold either. In order to get cash for the diamond one would take them to a pawn shop where you'll get, maybe, 30 cents on the dollar.
I find it often troublesome when people use resale value as an argument for investing in something. It's only a factor if there is an intention to resell.
Book me on your next cruise and enjoy your personal punching bag.
Between the parking lots and the gangs of roaming teens I equate malls with hell on earth, so I'm not sure I'd even know where to go if I won a spree...probably the travel agency to book one of those month long cruises, the change would probably go to tatts if there was a shop nearby.
