An old law that regulates shipboard passenger travel. It basically states that a foreign flagged vessel cannot disembark passengers, if it makes a stop in another US port, until it first stops in a foreign port.
It is sometimes referred to as "The Jones Act" but that is incorrect because that relates to cargo and not people.
The Jones Act does cover people. It defines the legal responsibilities of an employer to his employees who are defined as " seaman ". It is much broader than Workers Compensation in that it covers 100% of an injured employees medical bills to maximum cure and it covers " wages an maintenance " while injured plus you can couple a suit for pain and suffering. In addition it protects the seaman for 24 hours a day and not just for on the job injuries.
I should have qualified that with "cargo vessels", then again many cruise passengers do board as passengers and after seven days of dining and buffets, leave as cargo.
