Default They Bit The Dust!

Krispy Kreme, has closed 3 of their stores here. So much fanfare was given to this southern delicacy, as it came up to Yankee territory, it was amazing! Dunkin Donuts, born & bred in the town next to me, has such a grip on this part of the country, it really didn't stand much of a chance. Doesn't it figure, the one that is still open, is not that far from me....I don't often eat donuts, but that rasberry glazed one, is so good you want to do a dance!

Krispy Kreme as a company is in very bad shape, so closing franchises is not suprising.

Sometimes the fact that somthing is not available in an area creates a legendary aura surrounding the product. An example was Coors Beer which was only available in the Mountain West until last decade. It was bootlegged and imported by the carload. Now that it is available nationwide everyone realizes what horse p*** it really is. , just kidding, I have been known to quaff a few Coors Lights.

You can see how popular DD is up there in New England when you take note of the fact that the arena which was formerly called the Providence Civic Center is now named the "Dunkin' Donuts Center". Where will it all end? Glazed with cappuccino, anyone?

Krispy Kreame expanded too fast and became too aggressive. They took a gamble and it didn't pay off. They also did some "creative accounting" that came back to bite them. They are now paying the price. Boston Market did the same thing a few years back. They also opened hundreds of restaurants throughout the country within an eighteen month period. Over two thirds of those restaurants are now closed.

KK relied heavily on marketing and reputation to sell their product and over saturated the market with not only putting their products in their own stores but in supermarkets. Thus competing against themselves.

Oh yeah: Two other things: People are trying to find healthier alternatives and I personally don't care for them.

Take care,
Mike

I, too, never saw what all the fanfare was surrounding Krispy Kreme. I'm not impressed with them.

I agree Mary Lou and Mike....it's that lardy after taste that makes it possible for me to actually pass when Krispy Kremes are around.
Angela Z. who wishes she could also pass on the dunkin donuts but that's not ever gonna happen!

Maybe it's because I grew up in Atlanta eating KK, but DD doesn't hold a candle to those KK donuts hot off the presses!

My teen son and his friends often hijack me to take them to KK late at night. When the "hot" sign is on (which it is almost all the time at the KK near us) they literally take them off the belt and you eat them hot....

Having been raised in the midwest with a DD accross from the high school, I have had quite a few DD. Now living in L.A. (lower Alabama) we have KK here. Between the two it is KK all the way. I agree with Dorthy, the time for KK is when the sign is on.

We had the same problem here in the midwest, just too many too fast. I still favor DD over KK anyday, especially love their coffee.

We have been spolied up here in Canada by Tim Horton's - I was totally unimpressed by Krispy Kreme - sounds like many others were not very impressed either. I couldn't beleive how many outlets they had in Vegas - seemed like every casino had one.

Jennifer> Having watched DD develop over the past few years (I had the opportunity to pick up a foreclosed franchise a few years back, but luckily passed on it) I have noted that they are watching Tim Horton's closely, and are copying them most intently. There is a lot of repect at DD head office for Tim Horton's, considering the hurt Timmies put on them North of the border.

DD is becoming a Timmies clone. KK crashed and burned here also.

I grew up with Winchell's, then moved and found Dunkin' doughnuts, then moves south and found Krispy Kremes.

I have found that I like Plane cake doughnuts. all our grocery stores carry KK here, so I haven't eaten the prementioned in years.
