Default Travel Agent vs. online air purchase

I notice that the fee for something like Orbitz is 4.99 to 17.99 per ticket and the travel agent mentioned a 35.00 fee per ticket. Am I looking at this correctly? Is it more expensive to buy the air thru a TA?

This can add up with the purchase of several tickets.

The airlines quit paying commissions to travel agents for air travel several years ago so most charge some sort of fee.

The airlines themselves even have begun to charge you extra if you book your air directly with them by telephone.

I say research your air, find a price you like, go online to the airline web site, and book it their.... as long as the price is the same.

Karen:

I usually check through Expedia or QIXO. I then go directy to the airlines site to book. Sometimes I've found better flight times or prices on the airlines site and have saved a lot in "booking fees" (we're a family of 6).

I'd say if your TA is charging you 35.00 to process, you should find a new one. Most only charge 5 or 10, which is reasonable.

Thanks everyone,
I think my TA actually said it is 50.00 but sinse it is multiple tickets she would charge me 35 per ticket. It sounds like not such a good deal. I normally buy on-line and may just go to the airline site. Thanks for the advice.
