Default National Get Over It Day -Thursday March 9th

Since Thursday is National Get Over It Day tell us your most embarrassing moment. Here is mine. One evening in Wal-Mart in Concord NH I had to make a "nature call" I headed for the ladies room and went about my business. as I came out of the stall I noticed the line of urinals that I did not notice in my hurry to get in. Much to my embarrassment there was a man there using one. I stammered a hello and then.....I stopped to wash my hands!! I could not help myself. Then I headed for the door and there was another man entering. I said hello to him and hurried out. In another Wal-Mart where I shop the ladies room is on the right so I automatically went right without realizing it was reversed in the Concord store.

My most embarrassing moment happened only last Friday. My old truck gave me no indication or warnning that the battery was going bad. They usually do give you a little warnning. I was at a red light and I popped the clutch a little too quick and it died. I went to start it, but nothing but that dreadful clicking sound. I popped the hood and looked under like I knew what I was doing. At that time a truck pulled up in the other lane of this 4 lane rd. 3 guys ask if I needed a push to get it out of the road. I said that would be great. I closed the hood and got in and VaVoom...they were gone. Hmmm. I got out and started to push it. It is a standard, so I thought I could push start it. Just as I got under the light, going down hill, I went to jump in. I forgot, that I cant jump. .I did manage to get one foot and leg inside as this demented gray ghost of a truck started dragging the big boy down the hill. Luckily the same mind that got me into this mess, quickly said you have to stop this truck. I looked inside at my other foot and it was right by the brake and I HIT hard. At which time it caused me to stand up and then I got in. It was then I realized that I was cross ways in the two lanes and lots of traffic behind me. I turned the wheel sharp to the right and let is slowwwwwwlllllly start rolling and all that traffic went by. I got to the bottome of the hill, popped the clutch and boom, it started. I never let off of the gas until I rolled into the parkig lot at work. DW bought a new battery at lunch and I installed it. Problem solved. Well not really. I had to get a new pair of shoes because I rubbed a hole in the left one, dragging it trying to stop. This could have went in a different direction. I am glad it did not. It WAS one of the most embarrasing moments in this adventure filled life that I have lived so far.
I wish someone had got that on tape. I belive that would win AFV..I know the people behind me got a good laugh. 8)

I already got over it, but here's one, and it IS cruise related. I'm one of those guys who can make an expensive suit look like it came from skid row. It is my signal sartorial attribute and it is why I don't like to dress up, but only do so when it is expected. Add to that a remarkable penchant for manual fumbling, usually at the worst possible time.

So, I was wearing such apparel, sweating out the last formal dinner of my Inspiration cruise, and trying my best to keep as low a profile as possible so no one would notice how rich but shabby I appeared. I was trying as hard to be un-noticeable, no doubt, as that steak on my plate had tried to get upstream. And I was just as successful!

Just as I reached for my glass of wine, some family member at the table, made a funny remark about their day ashore in Belize. I tried to stifle a laugh and my misaimed mitt bumped against the wine glass--clank, thud, splash! It was the sound heard 'round the dining room, and every eye in that part of the room cast my way.

So much for my low profile. Since I had their attention, I gave them a show. "Did any of you see that pink pelican? How did that thing get in here?" I asked my family. "He dove for my salmon and hit my wine glass!" The members of the spring break bikini team, in proper attire across the aisle, confirmed seeing the bird hovering over my head before the aborted dive, to the guffaws of my family members.

My wife, of course, was most amused by the incident; and entertained the surrounding tables by reciting a litany of my past dining misfortunes throughout the remainder of the meal.

If you don't laugh when it happens, laugh later and get over it.

I am sorry Steve that mine was not cruise related but if I had not stopped that truck when I did, I would have been cruising for sure. And Probably NeeKed at that.

I've also gone in the mens restroom at Kohl's in a hurry and didn't notice the urinals until I was on the way out. I was in a different Kohl's than the one I usually go too and the restrooms were opposite. I got the hint that something was wrong when I noticed pants around the ankles in a stall and they were mens shoes. Oh well...... I got a good laugh anyway.

I was traveling a lot on business back in those days and mostly to the same cities. In one, I always stayed at this same hotel. I had been staying there for most of a year and the staff knew me well. On this particular trip I was staying as usual, because of my frequent traveler status, on the concierge level and I was staying over the weekend.

It was Saturday night and I had been down to the lounge for dinner and drinks since the concierge lounge wasn't open on weekends. At home, sometimes I have a tendency to sleep walk. This night I retired to bed, completely naked, and fell asleep. I awoke in the hallway just as my door closed shut and locked. Oooops!!!!

I went into the concierge lounge to call security, as I sat at the concierge desk without a stitch of clothing on. Drat, the phone is turned off on the weekends to stop unauthorized phone calls.

Hmmm.............what to do??? It's 4:00 a.m. and I'm naked as a jaybird and locked out of my room. It's now Sunday morning and soon enough people would be waking to go to church. How would they react to seeing a naked man in the concierge lounge as they walk past in their Sunday best?

There were napkins on the counter...........not large enough. No towels in sight. As I rummaged through the drawers in the lounge I found a tablecloth. I wrapped myself in it and got in the elevator to go to the front desk. Luckily, no one was in the lobby as I approached the front desk.

"Don't ask, I told Martha, as I asked her for a key to my room." She smiled and handed me a key. Having that key in my hand was the most precious thing I ever held.

Regards,
Thomas

Thomas> that sounds like an episode of Desperate Housewives.

Now just imagine if you hadn't been staying on the concierge level......

As for me, I always wear shorts or something when staying in a hotel. That is because, more than once, I've been handed a key to an OCCUPIED room .

And, naturally, housekeeping will barge in at 7:30 am if there is no Do Not Disturb sign on the door.
