Default Have you ever heard of "Shut the Box"??

"Shut the Box" is the name of a game I played this past weekend in San Antonio. I had never heard of it before, and we had an absolute blast playing it. The "legend" is, the Norman (French) fisherman, after a day at sea, when the fish were salted and put in the barrels, and their nets were cleaned, would go belowdecks and take out "the box" to play.
It is a game of chance, and numbers, involving dice, and nine movable (flip up) numbered tiles. Your goal is to turn down all the numbered tiles and "shut the box" to end the game.
Just wondered if anyone had heard of it, and I will definately have to go out and look for one myself! It would be a great game to take cruising, if they make a "travel size" version, as it is a large and cumbersome box!

No, Donna, I have never heard of that game, but it does sound like fun! If you find one, let me know, ok?

I saw it advertised in a lighthouse catalog I get, but have never played.
Sounds fun.

Only time I ever heard "SHUT THE BOX" was when mom yelled at me for keeping the door to the fridge open too long..I could not resist it.

I have played it before. And as you said it is a fun game, very addicting.

My family and I love this game. It's not an easy game to find in stores but you can buy them on ebay.

Doggroomer, thanks for the hint. I found a travel sized one on E-Bay, and have put a bid on it!

Absolutely Lombard! The reason I looked for a travel version was because I wanted to bring it along on the Century cruise to share with everyone. If I get it, I will do a "test" run on Princess in May!
The actual game is a pretty large and cumbersome box, that would be very awkward to travel with, so I hope I get the little one...

Default shut the box & blockus

I have played that game since I was a kid (I am in 40's now)--my dad had one. Not sure if it was popular in midwest, I know he had one since the navy. Very additcting.
It can be found on A..zon.com under shut the box.

Another addicting game is Blockus -last cruise we brought the full size board and pieces (great for outdoors as parts don't blow around) now this Christmas they came out with a travel edition for 2 people. Haven't opened it yet, but it is being packed.

Update: I won the bid on e-bay, just waiting for delivery. Meanwhile, I searched a few stores locally, and most places I was told they didn't carry it because of it's English name. (don't even ask!) Finally, I found one at a store who had it hidden in the back under a counter, because it's English. Such is life in Quebec.....

So funny you brought this up. I was in a store in Celebration last weekend and saw one - I had never heard of it before, but it looked very interesting and was tempted to buy it. I guess now, I will have to go get it and see how much fun I can have.

This made me laugh! I'm assuming you don't mean the name I learned it as "Batten Down the Hatches", but rather as "Clapper" - It is a fun game to play. Not sure where my Dad got his, since he was in the Air Force and not the Navy, but we had one at home when I was a child!
