Default Cruisers of the Millenium killed on shore excursion.

It was just reported on Headline News that 11 tourists from the cruise ship Millenium were killed in Northern Chile when their tour bus plunged off a cliff. Many of them were Americans.

Sounds like they were on a shore excursion and this bus accident occurred. So sad.

Regards,
Thomas

That IS news. We don't hear about excursion accidents very often. Thanks for the info. I'll have to turn the TV on now. Lynne

That is very sad. This is the first I've heard of it.

How very sad, but not all that surprising. I've been on some very scary bus rides, including one in Dominica just last week - the roads can be narrow, steep and usually wet in the mountains.

What a tragedy for everyone involved, including the cruise line.

We have been to Arica Chile. 2 years ago on the Ryndam. The surrounding county is ultra dry desert and Andes foothills. Some of the "foothills" are over 10,000 ft., and there are some very narrow twisty roads. Our excursion there was a train ride up a valley into the foothills so we did not do a bus trip there, but we did get a good look at the roads. If the buses are in no better mechanical condition than the train, that may partly explain the accident.

Our prayers go out to the families who lost loved ones so tragically in that Chilean bus accident.

The driver said that he lost control of the bus, when he swerved to avoid a collision with another vehicle.

My husband and I have done mountain bus tours in foreign countries. Some were scary, because they do not use barriers on the narrow windy roads.

It was a do it yourself excursion, not sanctioned by Celebrity.

More details are starting to emerge from this story, yes this excursion was not arranged by Celebrity and Royal Caribbean (Celebrity's parent) has never arranged excursions with this tour company before. The deceased were part of a Jewish group touring from New York and Connecticut. Also authorities are now starting to seriously look at the possibility that the driver fell asleep at the wheel. What a sad story, think of good thoughts for all those involved and hope that no CruiseMates were involved.

This was a non-approved excursion and the bus was not licenced to carry passengers. There is a lesson for all of us here. When you are in a strange land, it may not be a good idea to climb in with some guy you don't know from Adam who is the first guy you see on the dock just because he has a big smile on his face and promises a cut rate. Usually the companies vetted by the cruise line are far more reliable.

Once on a south sea island, we decided to go our own way and we rented what appeared to be a homemade bus with two other couples. It turned out that it had very little in the way of brakes, lacked the power to climb a hill (we had to get out) and the driver had roughly the same driving skills as my 10 year old grandson. I think I'll let Princess, Holland, whoever do the choosing from now on.
