Default Poll: Cruise Cash: Travelers Checks or ATM Card

When cruising do you use Travelers Checks, ATM card or other means to obtain cash in local currency when you are OFF the ship and in port?

This applies more to cruises in Non-Caribbean itineraries where U.S. Dollars are not accepted.

Take care,
Mike

Our only experience is in Canada and we used our credit card. I called the company before we left to let them know where we are traveling to so they would expect charges and not think someone stole our card. They gave me an 800 # for emergencies or problems. They charged a small exchange fee on the total purchases at the end of the month and it was very convenient for us.

I used my credit card when I had to pay for something and let the credit card company worry about the exchange. Everywhere I went, I could pay US so I used cash.

I used to count on travelers checks but now I use my debit/ATM card and that is the way to go! As long as you have a 4 digit, non alpha PIN #, works like a charm.

I've used it in Italy, France, Spain, England, and I found that I got the best exchange rate that way.

Cash is way too risky, travelers checks are not readily accepted and an open bank isn't always easy to find.

Credit cards are o.k. but for smaller purchases the Euro or local currency is definitely better.
