Money is mentioned many times in this forum. I thought maybe, it would be good to make a list of the many countries of the world with their current currencies. I have listed about 70 and know that this is not all. I hope you can keep this list as a reminder when we travel the world. This is educational for all of us. I have traveled in exess of 100 countries and have been able to keep with me a few coins or paper money from many of them. They are a reminder of where we have been.

I have a friend who has travelled extensively throughout her life. Early on (55 years or so ago) she began collecting coins from her visits and since charm bracelets were all the rage then, she had them drilled and used them as charms. Her bracelet is quite a conversation piece since many of those curriencies - or countries - no longer
exist.
Great post - fun to think about. I saw a progaram on Discovery recently about the US Mint and thought it was interesting that 70% of the world's money is printed at the US Mint. I always assumed everyone printed their own currency - who knew you could job it out?
I used to wonder why some country didn't come up with a "permanent" currency, meaning one that didn't rip or tear.
Well one finally did. The Isle of Man, a part of the British Isles and an island in the Irish Sea, did just that on a trial basis back in I believe the seventies with their currency (based upon England's Pound Sterling). It apparently was everything it was billed to be and somewhere I have a Manx Pound Note of this currency.
I'd say it will really be worth something some day. They stopped engraving the notes on the special plastic used. If I remember correctly and as is the case with so many other things, it was just too expensive and may have had other undesirable traits as well...I dont' remember.
In my college macro-economics classes, I learned a very interesting thing.
Many of the World's nations entrust their nation's gold bullion to the United States.
They store their national treasure offshore, entrusted to the Federal Reserve.
Apparently, they believe their gold is safe, because the United States isn't likely to be invaded and defeated anytime soon, because the United States has a stable political system, with an orderly transisition of power, because the Federal Reserve is a stringently regulated body, and because sufficient safeguards are present.
Oh yes, we love to be awkward, everyone knows the Pound Sterling, but Scotland, Ireland, The Channel Isles, Isle of Man, Scilly Isles (I think) all publish their own perfectly legal versions and all at a 1:1 ratio.
Each of these are 'supposed' to be recognised by the other regions, but just try using one in a shop in England & see how far you get
If you do end up in England with anything other than Bank of England issued coins & notes, head straight into the first bank you see & ask them to change them to avoid later delays, or keep them as an interesting conversation point
