My sister just calls me and asks who did the song, "Spirit in the Sky", I've been singing this song all day. She works at a thrift store and everyone that came in remembered the song (you have to be a "little" older unless you remember the 1986 version) but not the artist.
Well, turns out that it is a "One Hit Wonder" by Norman Greenbaum from 1970. I've always liked the song but sure could have fooled me, thought it was a group!
I don't think I would have ever gotten that one. And now that song is in my head too! .

OMG!! As soon as I read the title of your post, I shouted "Norman Greenbaum"!! That is one of my all-time most hated songs! At the rink where I used to skate, they always played it for the "Girl's Speeding" set, although I have no idea why. My friend and I HATED that song!
Thank goodness he was just a "one-hit wonder!"
Yes, I knew it was Norman Greenbaum and I too used to hate that song and then a friend of mine's son died and she told me how he'd picked that song as one of the ones to be played at his memorial service (he was in his late 40's early 50's). Now whenever it comes on the radio I feel like I can't turn it off because of him.
