Default MayDay....... MayDay!

Do you remember when............ The first of May rolls around, and tradition would (as a kid) get you to make up little May Baskets for your friends. Deliver them to their doorstep, ring the doorbell, and then run like the ba-jesus so they couldn't catch you? Cause if they caught you they had to give you a Kiss !

Of course for me, picking the boys was easy, you only really pick the ones you like if you know what I mean.

Or at least that is what we did where I grew up.

AHHHH........ Childhood!

Did any of you have any similar May Day celebrations?

Jane

In Elementary school we did the May pole dance. Each class had different color outfits, and it was so much fun.

I had a few tanks and some mobile scud missiles roll across the front yard followed by a couple thousand soldiers.

Take care,

Mike, Not everyone will understand that. The young members will think you have a very interesting front yard.

Another New Englander remembering the May Baskets. I grew up in Melrose Mass. Learned the tradition from my Mother who grew up in Eastport Maine. It seems to be a tradition to New England only.

When I was in high school the first of May was traditionally a day to cut school sort of with mom's blessing. This came about because my oldest brother had horrible hayfever and every May 1 his high school had a big picnic that would be miserable for him so mom didn't make him go....even though the rest of us went to different high school we kept up the no school on May 1 tradition.

Luanne,

The actual Russian "Victory Day" parades are on May 9th. It turned into the old Soviet Union's show of force on their "May Day".

In my youth we did the May Baskets and dropped them on doorsteps and ran off. We also did the May Pole. I usually ended up becoming tangled and became something resembling a May sacrifice tied to the May Pole.

Take care,
Mike

Actually I am originally from Nebraska, so May Baskets were across the country, or at least the middle to the east coast that I am aware of.

Mike........ Didn't your Momma tell you that you needed to put away your tanks and GI Joes when you were done playing with them. Instead of letting them run rampage in your front yard.

I Do remember doing the May Pole at least once. Although I am wondering if Mike intended on getting "All Wrapped Up" for some attention? What do ya think Mike?

Jane,
It wasn't for attention. I was just a "klutz".

Take care,
Mike (Who still doesn't know when he should go up or down.)

When I was in school, we sang the April Showers song that spoke of the flowers that bloomed in May.

I remember delivering May Day baskets around the neighborhood, ringing the door bells and running to hide, peeking though, to see them retreive them.
