Default I have no idea what that is. But I'll try it.

My 1st cruise ever is in 10 days on the Sapphire Princess. With the unlimited array of food onboard I have decided to try any dish that I have never eaten before. I do not possess a shy palate to begin with and am not sure if any of the food will be exotic, but with this special opportunity to send back a dish that does not agree and try something else, I believe I will expand my gastric horizons. (and perhaps my waistline.)

As a question, what dish have you tried onboard for the first time that left you delighted and which have you wished never found its way to your plate.

Ostich; I have been hooked on ostrich since first trying it.

As for dislikes, I can't remember something I have tried that I will not try again. However, I am not very adventurous so I probably would not have tried something in first place that I might not like.

aahhh adventures in eating! one of the many things that i love about cruising.
One food that i fell in love with was Grilled Grouper. Very hard to find anywhere.
If you have any questions about any dish, ask your senior waiter on your wait team.

Unlike you Grouper grazers, I tried it and had to say nope. It was just too fishy tasing for me. I KNOW it is fish but it was just too strong. I did try the calamari(sp?)and fell in love with it. I will try anything once. Almost.

Trying new foods is one of the top things I love about cruising and travel in general. On cruises I have had ostrich and on my last cruise I was able to try kangraroo for the first time. It was quite good but was prepared VERY bland. Then again just about any corn and grain fed mammal is "usually" pretty good. Try an old swamp buck deer or grass fed beef and see how well you like venison or beef then.

I am the type of person that will try anything that other human beings have eaten and lived. I rarely say yuck until after I try it and that's not too often if its done well.

Take care,
Mike

Escargot!!! I did really well, until my son said "Mom be careful that they don't crawl off the table."

I also like trying new things.

I have to admit, I tasted lobster for the first time on this last cruise. I could take it or leave it, not much of a seafood fan...

I had Key Lime Pie for the first time on a cruise.
I still need to try the rack of lamb.

One "esoteric" thing we all agreed we could do without: whipped goat cheese on the beef tenderloin. Yuck. Smells bad, too.

I am quite the oposite as I am NOT very curious or exploratory with foods... I dont know if that is partly because I have so many intestinal problems or if its because Im just too picky... but hey, I can get sick eating dry toast !

So, I will leave the exploriing up to you brave souls & will giggle when u wrinkle up your noses after u tried something u just cant stand !

For me.... only the regulars, please !!

Ostrich!?! What lines and itins. serve that?

Any of them serve frog legs? hehe

Mike, I have been eating the venison so many years that the beef tastes weird now.

I tied escargots, and I like it! It wasn't anything like I thought it would be. I tried lobster, which I liked, and crab, which I LOVED!

I could not bring myself to try the frog legs, though. Just couldn't.

My very favorite food on a cruise is the surf & turf night. YUMMMY
But on the Carnival Liberty, I had to send it back. the beef was over cooked and the lobster was tough. Yuck.
I have had it on HAL and was fantastic.
As for trying a new dish, I will try anything once.
I really like all seafood, anything I see I like.

Hi paddletoe53,

I'm just the opposite! I can't stand the taste of lamb and love escargot! The escargot is very "garlicky", so if you don't like garlic you probably won't like escargot!

I haven't tried calamari, but will on our next cruise!

Karen: I also like venison but I have found that most folks who have had farm raised venison and then taste wild venison, prepared identically, will probably not enjoy it.

My wife is that way. I have to completely smother or marinate my wild venison in order for her to eat it but she will eat farm raised venison with little seasoning.

I have also found, many times, lamb that is poorly prepared or that is too old and let become mutton does not taste too great. I had an Executive Chef where I once worked who said Mint Jelly was created to cover up bad lamb. I agree.

Take care,
Mike

I eat almost anything, including all forms of sushi and sashimi. But I will not eat insects in any form. Fortunately, I know of no cruise line that serves them, at least not intentionally.

Generally speaking food on cruise ships is good but quite bland.

Pumpkin soup was a first for me on Carnival and I LOVED it enough to try and make it at home.

Other than that, I don't remember any "firsts" for me on a cruise in terms of food.

My son, on the other hand, was quite the picky eater. On his first cruise, taken to celebrate his 13th birthday, he tried something he'd never eaten EVERY NIGHT. The waiters got a kick out of this kid ordering all sorts of new dishes. He developed quite the taste for sushi on a cruise ship and now is my sushi buddy (my dh won't touch it).

I've eaten venison twice. The first time it was wonderful-fork tender and very mild. The second time it was awful-wild tasting and you couldn't cut it with the BEST knife! Apparently, it depends on how it's "dressed" in the field. I've never heard of farm raised venison here, but would give it a try if it was available.

That sounds awful to me ! It must have a very good taste to be able to stand the "rubber band" texture! (Hi to Daffy from BJ )
