Default UConn v. Banker cruise decision face off.....

Which cruiseline has the better food? RCCL or Carnival????

Please only respond if you have been on both. I need this to be fair.

Banker and I are having a problem deciding on whether to do our Med/TransAtl cruise next year on RCCL or Carnival. One of the biggest points is food - there are other issues, but this one seems to keep coming up.

So, for those of you who were going to pick a cruise based solely on the quality of food in the dining rooms and lido deck buffets, and you have been on both cruiselines in the recent past, please let us know...

Thanks,
Jodi

Jodi - I've been on three Carnival cruises and two RCCL cruises (with number three coming up.) I voted but I wish you would have put a same quality choice. I feel the food quality on both is the same. Dining room slight edge to RCCL, buffet slight edge to Carnival (especially the pizza) and a slightly bigger edge to RCCL for their speciality restaurants (Chops and Portofino's) - this would be a factor if the RCCL ship you are looking at has one or both of the speciality restaurants (but Carnival's was excellent too.)

I agree with Lisa. We've been on three RCL cruises and 7 Carnival cruises, and we feel the quality of the food is very similar on both.

The one difference I observed is that RCL had a wine sommelier, while Carnival servers try their best to make wine recommendations with little to no wine knowledge. The only wine experts I've found on Carnival ships are only in the supper clubs.

A couple of years ago I would have said Carnival, no problem.

But after our recent Radiance cruise, I'd give the edge on food and certainly service, to RCI. Carnival does have the better buffet, but on Radiance class ships RCI also offers the SeaView cafe, which is an added extra, and good.

In the dining room, I think now RCI has a slight edge... but extra points for better service.

And RCI ships (at least those in the Med) are prettier ships.

I have to agree with Kuki and give one more vote for RCI.

we shall see, up until now I have been aurguing against Jodi because of 2 things:

1/ Because...hello??? It's Jodi................

and

2/ largely based on what others who have sailed extensively on both to say about the issue -> rccl

I have not sailed enough carnival to be able to say based on first hand experience.

We are going to Disney for a week in 2 weeks, then Carnival Glory for a week (yes, she talked me into it even though I swore up and down no Carnival - wife and kids aren't particular)

We shall see.....

thanks
banker

(PS- in agreement with kuki, we just did Radiance in January and found the food to be excellent)

Just curious you guys, what month are you looking into? Are the guests on the ship mostly Italian speaking?

Default Cruise decision

Please, Jodi, don't ever yield to Banker! (Just kidding, Banker, where ya been?) Anyway, we have sailed Valor and Legend on Carnival. On RCCL we have sailed Voyager, Explorer, Enchantment, Legend of the Seas and Jewel. We find both lines pretty comparable, but I think Carnival wins with freshness and variety. Banker, the kids will love Carnival; lots of energy and their shows are good productions.
