When Mrs. Cynic came to me with the story that our brand-new washing machine was eating our socks and underwear, I said "that's a load of crap... washing machines do NOT eat clothing.... there is nowhere for it to go" and left it at that. She then presented me with about 8 single socks, and asked me where the matching other was. I said, stuck to the jeans due to static... look in the pant legs. One or two were found in that manner, so I figured that was the problem, now solved.
Mrs. Cynic did not let the matter die, however, and one day she brought me to the machine, opened the door (front-loading) and pulled back a rubber gasket. Inside were a bunch of socks. It WAS eating socks.
I eat my words
FYI> If you happen to own one of those nice new Whirlpool "Duet" energy-saving front loaders, check the rubber gasket inside the washer door. It fits loosely, and stuff can get lost inside. You might just find those elusive eaten socks hiding inside....

Well. I have the old fashioned top loading machine.....but a very new model and I can guarantee that washing machines eat socks! I am convinced that my missing socks are in a parallel universe! Washiang machines are very complicated machines!

Our washing machine does not eat socks, but my teen son's feet sure do!
The socks of his that I find in the wash all have no heels! I usually throw them out rather than wash them. I don't know what it is with his feet, but he usually rots through at least 1 pair a week!
Cynic- Kindly stop spreading misinformation!!!! Eveyone knows that every washing machine has a portal to another dimension inhabited by creatures that subsist on wet socks. Whenever they are hungry they reach through the dimensional portal and grab a snack.

Gee I thought I had the only monster sock eating washing machine! It even throws up my DH socks leaving holes in the toes. Whats up with that? Perhaps I should give it a dose of Alka Seltzer with each sock load! Cuz I don't want the ones with the holes in the toes back!

Yes... mine (godzilla) does eat socks. I don't know where they go but they vanish down its gullet.
