Default Do you play the guitar or other musical instrument?

Tomorrow is my first day of guitar lessons. Youngest daughter and I bought the guitar<she has lessons in school> Does anyone here play an instrument and if you do what kind? is it hard to get used to the guitar strings on your fingers? Is it easy to learn? I wanted to learn to play the guitar all my life, now I finally try it out

Way to go Sue! My oldest daughter plays the guitar, and has a band. I play String Bass, Sousaphone, Tuba, and Valve Trombone, and was a musician in the U.S. Marine Corps Band for a number of years. I've always wanted to play the piano, so plan on lessons when I retire. (soon I hope) Hang in there with the guitar lessons, it's very good for you, and your blood pressure too!

Good for you, Sue. As Ken said, you will find all kinds of pleasure in playing the guitar or any other type of instrument. I've been playing the piano for about 65 years now, having taken lessons for 2 years or so in my early teens. I can also play the organ and keyboard, of course, but the baby grand in our family room is without a doubt my favorite.

The only problem with the piano, sadly, is that it isn't portable.
Stick with the guitar, Sue. You can take it anywhere!

I play the Bass, Drums, Trombone, Tuba, Clarinet, Bongos, Keyboard, Piano, and I am going to be learning Sousaphone for my school marching band. I can't help you out on the guitar, sorry!

I took piano lessons in my youth. Quit when my piano teacher recommended I read more

Think she decided that with my total tone deafness I should look for a different path to stardom.

Way to go Sue.

I played guitar a lot in my younger days, but "old arthur" has taken a toll on some of my digits. Your finger tips on your chording hand will get pretty sore until you build up calouses on them. One old tip is to soak them in alum water.

Good luck and good pickin.

How great Sue, learning something you've always wanted to do! I taught myself how to play guitar as a teenager, and continued, although minimally for many years. I have a guitar sitting in the basement that I haven't touched in years. For a period of time, about 10 years ago or more, I was part of a Childrens' entertainer/educator duet, and I played alot of instruments, mostly percussion and exotic, as well as sang. We also recorded a Childrens' album (my only claim to fame!)
As for those sore fingers, that is to be expected, and once you get callouses, it won't be so bad!
Do, what can you play so far? My first song was "House of the Rising Sun!"

I played the piano in elementary school but never really kept up with it.
My daughter played flute in her high school marching band (and will punch out anyone who approaches her with the "and one time at band camp" line! ) and my son is currently the trumpet section leader in the same band.
Ewokdude, what's your show this year? Our kids are doing a Danny Elfman show "Music for a darkened theatre" with selections from Edward Scissorhands, Charlie and the chocolate factory, Nightmare before Christmas and I forget what else.

OK - as the editor of this site, this is a little embarassing because it is a whole different part of my life, but I am a fairly accomplished musician, and my main instrument is guitar. I enjoy writing and recording my own songs.

Here is one I composed, recorded myself here at home (all-computer digital recording studio) and I am playing every sound you hear, including the guitars (lead & rhythm). There are many other sounds like horns, but I played them all on keyboards:

http://cruisemates.com/video/BadGirl-NEW.mp3

It will take a minute to start, because it has to download the MP3 file. No vocals on this one yet, but they are coming.

Mike, That's good. Can't wait to hear the words added in.

I play the Clarinet. Took lessons for years. Not much call for it these days.

Isn't it great to play an instrument? Well, I just finished my 2nd guitar lesson and I am wondering if I ever will learn something We will see.

learning an instrument starts out as a struggle, but hopefully you hit a point where it all starts to make sense and everything just starts happening quickly.

I suggest spending the first couple of months just learning the basic chords -- don't worry about reading notes on apage, you will NEVER use it!

Learn the basic chords first: E A D G C F B7 Amin, etc... practice playing them until you can switch without looking. Once you are at that point, just start looking for songs. Before you know it, you will be good enough to play - especially if you aren't shy about singing.

Learn the chords, and then get song chord shhets for songs you know, and start playing them. You find them on the Internet, just do a Google on:

Still love music.

Take care,

The best is Mychael Newman ... listen to the Gattaca soudtrack, it's absolutely magnifical.
I play only piano, I learn the portrait track of Titanic for 2 years, and I begin to up my level ... very hard !

Thank you - I spent the first 10 years of my adult life trying to be professional, but it didn't work out, so I moved on to other things. Of course, you do continue to learn, so I am better now than I ever was, but it is such a tough industry that I would rather be doing what I am doing.

Do I wish I could find the grvay train & made it big time as a musician - who wouldn't? But the vast majority of people do not, which explains why I can' stand to watvch HBO's Entourage. Most young people in Hollywood are just not that smart or luckt, unless they were born into the business.

Look how many famous people had parents in the biz? Well, I didn't. My parents were very supportive, but couldn't really help me any way except a little food money once in awhile.

No, Eric Clapton is God.

not the blaspheme, but that was very common graffiti in London in the 60s. He is my favorite player, too.

Thank you for the compliment.

The best I have of Eric Clapton is "Eric Clapton - Unplugged". Fantastic CD.
