Donna,

You know, this comic reminds me of something I thought about a while back.

What would I do if I were aboard the Titanic the night of the sinking? Being a man (a gentleman, I’d like to think ? ) a lifeboat wouldn’t be an option. Floating in the freezing ocean isn’t an option, either. So knowing the ship is going to sink, how do I get off the ship and survive until rescue.

The deciding factors in this kind of misadventure are staying dry and warm, and maintaining a positive attitude.

So how do I stay dry? Well, I don’t, entirely. In my plan, I’m wet briefly, and then out of the water from then on. Knowing that there would be a rush to the boat deck, I would wait on a lower deck for the crowds to leave, and then gather up a couple of steamer trunks. I’d also gather up some wool outerwear to keep me warm. I’d empty out the trunks so that they’d float, and then lash them together with whatever was at hand. And then after tossing them overboard, I jump in after them, climb aboard my makeshift life raft, and paddle out away from the ship. Wool clothing dries fairly quickly, and has good insulating value, even when wet. So that takes care of the dryness part.

The warm part is mostly covered by the wool clothing. But also by a goodly dose of “antifreeze.?

U.S. Navy studies have shown that sailors blitzed out of their minds will sit naked in ice water and not even flinch. Alcohol is a natural antifreeze, and a proven mood enhancer.

So, taking no chances, after assembling my life raft, I’d stop by the nearest bar, down a bottle of rum and then carry out my plan.

I’d be out of the water, mostly dry, warm, and have a positive attitude!

Of course, I sincerely hope I never have to put this plan to use!

Dean

Sounds like a plan.............If you do not pass out from consuming too much rum!

Ah, Laura,

We men are manly creatures. There's no such thing as too much rum! Besides, one bottle of rum wouldn't cause a manly man to pass out!

But remember the plan. One bottle of rum -- and one bottle only.

While we men like to party, survival is another thing entirely.

Surviving right along,

Dean
