Default Guarantee rooms

I know this has been talked about on here before so sorry for asking again. I'm thinking about a guarantee room on our next cruise. How does this work? Do you get upgrades with guarantee rooms. If I do a guarantee balcony, do they upgrade within same catagory or upgrade to higher catagory. I'm afraid of being stuck in a room with obstructed views. If I do a guarantee oceanview, do they upgrade to balacony? The ship would possibly be the Glory, are there any bad rooms on her? Does it make a difference how far out you book or how close you book? thanks for answering these questions most likely for the 100th time here. You all are great.

A guarenteed cabin means you will receive a cabin of same value or an up-grade if such cabins are available. Normally the earlier you book increases the possibility of an up-grade.

Assigned cabins means you will get the specified cabin you paid for. There are no up-grades.

ahh I now see the , I have always booked direct wiht the cruise line and got a cabin assignment. So no wonder I have never been given an upgrade.... (Usually I take my mom who is in her 80's with me on a cruise and want to make sure the room is near the elevator banks to help her navigate on her own.)

So is there a price difference between a guaranteed and an assigned.

That I know the answer to, yes there is a difference in price, guarantee is cheaper, that's why I was considering it this time. Maybe not always a lot of difference, but some.

I don't know it as a fact but, I would think with guarenteed rooms, it allows the Cruise Line more options to accomodate groups of people who want to be near each other.

If you have a guarenteed room, they can just move you to different cabins without consulting you providing you receive what you paid for or better.

I went back and checked the price difference in a guarantee room and a room of the next up catagory. There is $100.00 per person. It is consistant througout all of the different type cabins. This is a November 2007 sailing on the Glory. I just don't know if it is worth the lesser price to chance where you get a cabin.

just to throw in my 2 cents... we booked CRUISE LINE DIRECT... with 2 SPECIFIC ROOMS !!!! and, guess what.... THEY MOVED US !!!! I was p o'd @ first but it was to our advantage in the long run & instead of 2 rooms across from each other... one ocean view / one interior... we got 2 ocean views and our room was the last one @ the back so we were still across the aisle from our son... which was nice.... we could leave our doors open & talk to each other.... and another good thing no one came down that far as we were the last 2 rooms... lots less traffic... again, convenient for leaving our doors open while in room.

I would go for guarantee & just be glad to go... but I have some ANAL COMPULSIVES in my family who like to BE N CHARGE.... so, who knows... it takes all kinds !!

If cabin location is important, then you probably shouldn't book a guarantee.

Of the 3 I have booked:

1. upgraded within a category from a 4A to a 4D (my only inside cabin experience).

2. upgraded from an oceanview to a balcony (hurray!)

3. upgraded within the oceanview category.

I'm someone who doesn't spend much time in her cabin, so a guarantee is often good for me. But I have to say the upgrade to the balcony spoiled me and I now prefer a balcony.

Good luck.

Our last cruise was a guarantee balcony and we were given a grand suite! That was amazing! There were several others onboard who had the same thing happen. We have also booked a specific cabin and been upgraded. I guess it just depends on the ship and the total bookings at the time. We have always sailed on RCCL so I don't know anything about the Glory.

I guess my concern is getting a room that is right above or below a noisy part of the ship, like the bars or someplace that is going to be noisy late into the night. We were on the Main deck on the Elation, that was between two decks of nothing but cabins. It was very quiet. Some of the other ships I have looked at have a cabin deck right under or above a lounge or bar. How sound proof are the cabins from above or below?? My BF can hear a gnat sneeze a mile away, where I am very hard of hearing without my hearing aids. It would be 200.00 cheaper for the guarentee, but is it worth the chance? It's a very tough decision to make. Thanks for everyone input.

I understand your concern. When we were on the Elation, we were directly below the galley... the pastry preparation area... to be specific. I have never been in a cabin that was so NOISY! Guess what time they work! ALL NIGHT LONG! We could hear the heavy trays being thrown around. There must have been an industrial size sink directly above us and the drain came down, through the bulkhead of our cabin. You could hear the drain valve being opened and the water draining through the pipe to the holding tanks in the lower part of the ship. glurg, glug, glurg, glug! I had never before had any issues with cabin assignment, but this one made up for all previous cruises. We finally changed cabins the next to last night of the cruise, from an OV to an inside cabin, 2 decks below! For our "inconvenience" they gave us champagne, shipboard credit, another credit, and then when we changed cabins, another credit.
