Default A FIRST for ME --- LIVE on the Century!!

Today proved you’ve never seen or experienced it all. On cruise ships we’ve seen ships turn around to return ill passengers to port, and ship’s making full speed to reach a meeting point with helicopters for medical evacuations. But this evening as I was stepping out of the shower, Century’s Captain Pagonis came on the intercom to announce an unidentified boat had come too close to the ship and the U.S Coast Guard in Key West, Florida had been notified, and air support would be sent to search and check the area, and the boat. He explained they had passed the exact coordinates for the location of the boat to the Coast Guard.

In this area, between Cuba and Florida, one might expect to possibly encounter a boatload of Cubans attempting to reach America, but that did not sound like the case in this instance. I’m not sure what would have led the Captain and crew to believe that this boat warranted further investigation, but within minutes jet fighter flew by the ship.

Within a half hour of his first announcement Captain Pagonis was reporting to us again that the jet fighter was near the ship, but as yet had not found the ship in question.

However, at least from the view of the passengers onboard, the night went on as usual, with dinners, shows, and everyone wishing their friends safe travels for tomorrow’s debarkation. The Captain’s messages seemed to have calmed everyone, and it seems apparent there was not a threat to the ship, and it seemed he and the crew handled the situation well, and calmly. But being “escorted? by a Jet Fighter does give one pause to remember that sadly we do live in a different world than we did before Sept. ‘01.

Wow, that must have been quite an experience. It is sad that the world has changed and we are more aware. However, that awareness may protect us. I wish you all a safe journey home.

Kuki,

I had a similar experience, but not for similar reasons, which took place back in 1999, when the U.S. still had air force bases in Panama.

It was during our transit of the canal, when an F-16 on takeoff from Howard AFB came roaring over the bow of the ship in full afterburner. The Fighting Falcon was so low, and so close, that I could read the "LK" on its tail.

You know, there's nothing quite like the roar of a P & W jet engine to start your morning with!

Hi Kuki,
Yes, times sure are different, I hope all the Cruisemates make it home safely....I'm sure everyone is tired from all the excitement.

That's strange, I too heard that announcement just as I stepped out of the shower...although not the same shower as Kuki!!
Yes, it was a bit disconcerting hearing that announcement, and witnessing the jet fighter, but thank goodness, all was back to normal soon after.....

Don't you hate when you don't hear the end of the story?

Just for you Trip... the ENTIRE story.

The ship was a approached by a boat full of Caribbean Pirates, but their boarding attempt was repelled by the ACapella group, and all the cabin stewards and butlers throwing CruiseMates key chains at them!

Hey: I was also in the shower. I told you it was a wild party.

I have to plead a Sergeant Schultz: "I saw nothing."

A similar thing happened on the Carnival Legend and it does tell you that times have changed.

I'm glad the key chains were used for good instead of evil.

Take care,
Mike

Well we were not in the shower ,,,,We were still enjoying drinks watching the sun set off our aft balcony when we heard the announcement and saw the jet overhead. Very exciting.
