Default Football eh?

It seems for the third year in a row, Canada is world champion in amateur football. The Laval Rouge et Or team beat up on their U.S. competition and teams from around the world in Miami last weekend to take the trifecta in the "other Superbowl". Needless to say, CNN didn't lead with this story. I wonder why?

Not only can they play, but they can adjust their game. Canadian football is played with one less down and on a smaller field....

Some tough dudes live up my way. Good going guys!

Isn't Canadian football played on a larger field? 110Yds, and like 25 yard deep end zones? plus the receivers are running toward the line of scrimmage at a full sprint before the ball is snapped
(edited to say snapped instead of thrown) must have been still sleeping

Yes Darren, you could be right. At least it's not in meters....

And up here it's less a "game of inches". One less down calls for more passing. I guess that's why the receivers can be in motion.

Cynic,

Actually there are several major differences between U.S. and Canadian football rules, and playing fields.

Some of them are formational -- under Canadian rules, 6 men can be on the line of scrimmage, under NCAA rules, there must be at least 7 men.

I once watched a game between Simon Fraser University (B.C. Canada) and Portland State University (U.S.). It was here in Portland, so the Canadians had to play under NCAA rules. And I thought they adjusted very well to, for them, unfamiliar rules, and a smaller playing field. The referees called the game a little looser for the visitors, which I thought was fair, considering the adjustments they had to make under NCAA rules.

I wonder if someday, there will be a uniform set of football regulations between the two countries, like there are in Major League Baseball and ice hockey?

Dean

Mean Dean, Darren (and the funny guy with the big eyes)>

I don't spend much time watching Canadian-rules football....

I know more about US rules (which isn't much). It can get confusing when watching both leagues on the same weekend.....

Americans don't know much about Canadian football either. Except when Saskatchewan played Ottawa, that made the US media.... because of an amalgam between two leagues, the "Roughriders" played the "Roughriders"......(one team is now defunct).

CC, are you "aged" enough to have watched Warren Moon play with the Ottowa Roughriders?

I believe Moon only played for the Edmonton Eskimos when he played in Canada. The Eskimos won 5 consecutive Grey Cups (Canada's answer to the Super Bowl) With Warren at the helm. Before he joined the Houston Oilers.

Default Las Vegas Canadian Football

I thought I'd throw this in. Did you know that Las Vegas, Nevada had a Canadian Football team called the Las Vegas Posse. Only lasted a year (I think). They use to play football when we were still having 100 degree days. Way, way too hot for the players and spectators.

My 2 cents worth.
