Mrs Kuki and I came to Vegas yesterday... though with Vegas pace overload 2 days feels like a week.
They are expecting a HUGE weekend in Vegas, with the NBA All Star game, and Chinese New Year falling on the same weekend. The hotel staff are telling me they expect the place to be busier than either New Year's Eve or Super Bowl weekend (and if you've ever been here for those you know how CRAZY that is). Staying at the MGM Grand and we've already seen a number of NBA All Stars innundated with autograph seekers.
We're only here until Saturday, so will only catch part of the mayhem. Luckily we already have our show and dinner reservations in place, so no hassling with that.
We have a friend from Vegas joining us tomorrow and Friday; seeing the Cirque show LOVE at the Mirage tomorrow night, and Jay Leno Friday night, also at the Mirage. Dinner both nights at the Mirage as well. Tomorrow at a relatively new hot spot called Stack, and the next night at my favorite Vegas restaurant Kokomos.
Ya know.. being unemployed isn't so bad We had a week in Phoenix, here til Saturday, then home for 4 days before heading to Toronto to see my son perform in a national "moot court" competition representing his law school, then home for 3 weeks before heading to Florida for an 11 day cruise on Brilliance of the Seas (I'll be doing a Virtual Cruise Report for CM btw ), then home for 3 weeks before heading to Greece for the It's All Greek to Me CM group cruise. And somewhere in there I have to find some time to start looking for a new business or line of work.
Forgot to mention... and I'll have to get a couple of pictures tomorrow... the Statue of Liberty at NY NY is wearing a huge NBA East basketball jersey, and the Lion outside of MGM is in a huge NBA West basketball jersey.
Last night neither Mrs Kuki nor I slept very well, between me coming in late and banging about waking her, and her snoring waking me. So today I spoke to my casino host, and he was nice enough to get us another room directly across the hall.... so we're feeling a bit like we're on a cruise, with Mrs. Kuki in the inside cabin across the hall (only her inside cabin has a window ).. and since her room actually has two beds, she's told Ferne (the lady friend joining us tomorrow) that if we're out too late tomorrow night she can stay for a sleep over
Kuki that is too cute! Have fun with your pajama party.
This year we went up to the Dells for Christmas, and my sister had other plans, my brother is usually with his wifes family. So my parents asked me to make arrangements for them to go to Vegas for a few days so they could have a fun filled holiday. Well being the good daughter I am, I took care of the travel arrangements and got everything booked.
They used to come out to visit me in the 80's when I lived in Phoenix, and we'd take a side trip once in a while to gamble at Laughlin, but they had not been to Vegas since the 70's.
They called me after their first day, in absolute culture shock. They were so amazed that Vegas had changed and morphed into some sort of monstrous gigantic conglomeration of Neon and glitter, beyond their comprehension. My mom says..."there are no Americans here...we're the only ones I've seen" I am not sure what exactly that meant, But after this trip they were so overwhelmed by the mass of humanity and all of the things that "are Vegas" they asked me to never, ever send them back there again.
I am so glad you are enjoying your trip... I'm trying to figure out where we'll be spending next Christmas...Vegas is sound ing pretty good to me lol!
I live in Vegas and work at UNLV where the game is being played (TMC - Thomas and Mack Center). This event is taking over the campus - I didn't realize this game was so big. The brokers are selling tickets from $2000 to $21,000 PER ticket! I never would have guessed that the ticket prices would be so high.
I will be glad when this is all over and our campus and this city gets back to normal!
By the way, enjoy LOVE - it is one of the best shows in town (in my opinion).
The Cirque de Solei show LOVE at the Mirage was quite incredible!!
Some of it was "who knew human bodies could do that".
The city is just getting busier and crazier as the weekend approaches. BK, I too had NO idea the NBA All Star game was this big a deal, but I guess it's the first time its been held in Vegas.
Three days in Vegas and I'm about even on the gambling front, and Mrs. Kuki, who isn't a gambler is up about $75 playing nickel slot machines, which is really a feat.
Tomorrow night we're seeing the Jay Leno show back at the Mirage, so I'm hoping for some good laughs.
For those who remember our dear friend Popee who we first met cruising, and who sadly passed away.... his wife Ferne joined us tonight, and she's doing well, and it was terrific to see her again. She's joining us again tomorrow night, and that'll be nice.
Kuki truly envious of your travel; first Phoenix which I try to get out there to see my friend and now Vegas !
Awesome that you got to see the Love show. My friend was out there for her birthday and I tried to get her Love tickets for her present and they were sold out for months... so she got tickets to the Austrialian thunder from down under instead.
at least you weren't there for the nonPG13 conventions that they have out there....

I love vegas, too. I grew up going there since childhood (living in Phoenix it is just 240 miles). I saw so many stars when I was a kid there.
I was thinking just the other day, isn't Vegas big enough to have professional teams now? I mean if Tampa and Kansas City can do it. How big is Vegas? I know they love their UNLV basketball.
Paul, Las Vegas is more than big enough, it is the sports betting that keeps them away. Once upon a time the Utah Jazz played a partial schedule there.

Las Vegas is one of the fastest growing cities in the US. Vegas alone is about 600,000 and then you have Henderson 250,000+ and North Las Vegas 120,000+. So we're getting close to a million people. They have been pushing for a professional team here for years. But like Doug said, the gambling is a big issue ... you won't be able to bet on what ever team they bring to Vegas. Just like UNLV - you can't make a bet on the Rebels. I don't know that much about sports betting but I guess you're talking a lot of money.
I wouldn't mind them bring a National League Baseball team here. Then maybe I'd get to see my Cubbies more often!
On my way to work this morning, I was delayed by a police escort of a truck with what I assume was NBA players standing in the back. They were driving very slow down a street that crosses the strip (Tropicana). The truck was surrounded by police cars and the police cars would zoom ahead and block the intersection so they could go straight through the red light. I was heading to the university so I assumed they were going to the Mack. But they passed it up. AND ... it was 5:45 am???? I'm still wondering what it was all about. This town is out of control this week!!
Friday and a long weekend ahead. Looking forward to that!
I'm glad you are having a great time in Vegas. I spent quite a bit of time there in the late 90's while managing the installation of the computer and data systems for the MGM Grand. After three months I was very happy to come home. Too bad they didn't let me play with the money.
I am amazed at how different The Strip looked the last time I saw it in 2005.

It sounds like it was a good thing we got out of Las Vegas on Tuesday and came back to Phoenix before the basketball craziness got into full swing. It was already crazy when we were there. When we left on Tuesday, Lady Liberty was wearing her jersey, but the MGM Lion hadn't donned his yet. I can't wait to see your pictures of that!
We went to see Mamma Mia at Mandalay Bay and we loved it! We drove up this time so we could see the progress on the bridge over the Colorado River, just downstream from Hoover Dam, but we usually fly - just an hour flight from Phoenix as opposed to a 316 mile drive from Mesa. We'll definitely fly again next time!
I can't tell you how NUTS Vegas got tonight... and they say it's only going to get crazier tomorrow night.
I've been to Vegas on New Year's Eve where the place goes crazy, but I've never seen it like this! People and traffic everywhere!! Almost glad we're leaving tomorrow night, if it is going to be even more mayhem as the weekend continues.
We did make it to the Mirage for Jay Leno's show. Seats right in the center, about 6 or 7 rows back, and he put on a terrific show 90 minutes long. Also showed you can be very funny without an expletive filled act.
