Default Can I Hear a Round of Applause!!!

We have chatted about rude cell phone users, for many years now, & we all have horror stories, but we just caught a break, because the FCC has upheld the current ruling of no cell phone usage allowed on planes.
Thankfully, we now won't have to listen to the person sitting 2 inches away from us, discussing the stock market, or talk baby talk to a loved one,or the little kid who just wants to speak to Daddy at 30,000 feet.

Thank you, thank you, FCC! xoxoxoxoxooxo

You didn't say it, but of course you mean aboard aircraft.

Also, true to the habit of government regulators, whenever they do the right thing it's always for the wrong reason. In this case, they made their ruling on technical grounds, for fear that aircraft transmissions would overload the cell infrastructure across the country. The ruling had nothing to do with the peace and quiet we all hope for in the air. And, contrary to what we've been told for years, it had nothing to do with "interfering with the aircraft's navigational systems."

I had long predicted that if they ever did allow it, the first murder would take place in the first class compartment of a narrow-body aircraft. That's the place where half the people pay super-premium prices for peace and quiet, and the other half pay super premium prices for the privelege of doing any damn thing they want (or so they believe). The aisles would have run red with blood, and possibly some spilled Merlot.

How magnificent! There are certainly enough irritants on a plane with those damned cell phones!

Does this mean none on cruise ships, too? Wouldn't that be wonderful!

I always leave my cell at home/ in the car when I cruise.

Indeed. I never personally could figger out as well why people feel the need to post to the CM bulletin board while cruising......JMHO.

CrazySis and Cynic have got it right! I NEVER use my cell phone, or laptop, or any other electronic device, except my CD player for music, while aboard. The reason I'm aboard is to get as far away from the beeping, ringing, "you got mail", and all that stuff as possible!

Give me a lounge chair, a good CD of big band music, an 80 degrees day, a pina colada, and I'm a happy camper.

I try to treat being at sea as if it were my home. If I could figure out a way to accomplish my work without having to leave the ship, I could move to a ship full time. The technology available now allows me to stay in touch with the office which allows me to get away with longer trips. I have two two+ week cruise vacations this summer. No way could I be away from the office for over five weeks without at least some connectivity.

As for cell phone usage on the planes, I concur with the restriction. Unfortunately, it is being done for the wrong reasons.

I bring a cell phone so that I have the capability to communicate in an emergency or to let my family know if my flight home gets delayed.

And on one cruise, I came darned close to using it to dial "911" from the pier in San Diego when a baggage handler on the pier physically tried to seize my carry-on luggage from me.

That said, my cell phone rarely rings. It spends most of its life with the power switch in the position labeled "OFF." It gets turned "ON" only when I'm making a call and in very unusual circumstances in which I'm expecting a time-sensitive call. My friends and business associates call only my land lines unless we have coordinated in advance, so I know to leave my cell phone "ON."

Norm.

My elderly mother still worries about us and wants me to check in that we made it to our destination. She feels better when I do.

I'm no kid (Late 40s), but if it makes her sleep better I have no problem picking up the cell phone to ease her mind.

The first night at dinner one lady talked on the phone the ENTIRE time. She never even looked up when ordering her food and then she maybe had two bites. Her husband/date never spoke an just watched her gab away. They never came back. (thank heavens)
