Ok we are supposed to have thousands of these icky Cicada bugs coming out of the ground, to mate they do this every 17 years. My question is this are these things just here in Illinois, all over the U.S or in Mexico and other countries too?

The thing I find odd is that we in NZ seem to have them every summer.
Or is it just my imagination?
Mind you it will an interesting time for cats and free snacks?
We're supposed to get them up here in Northern Michigan too, but so far no sign of them. Think it's kind of interesting - they don't bite or bother anything and are great for the birds to eat and other animals.
Would love to hear the sound - don't ever remember hearing them before.
We have them at my other home in NC and I always love to hear them....it means summertime! Here in FL, the other evening when I was walking to my car after shopping at Walmart, I heard one in the tree nearby. Don't know what it means here in FL since it seems to be summer year round....lol.

We had a diferent brood hatch here two summers ago. They hit some places harder than others. I went out to my friends house and it was so gross. Everytime you took a step through her yard it was like crunch, crunch, crunch. My car looked like I drove it through a paintball match, covered with bug guts and the noise they make is deafening. They can't fly worth a darn and prepare for them to dive bomb at you and probably land in your hair. Their red eyes freak me out.
Aside from all that its really cool lol!
Im wondering if they will be in the jungles of Belize and Mexico at the Mayan sites? Beanie you really have me frightened! My friend Kent said one flew down his ex girlfriends top! I would die! OMG

...and if they are, and not having s-e-x for 17 years, then we're all in trouble.....

I live in California and I have never saw a Cicada bug. So I went to the internet. Creepy! I have been to Cabo San Lucas, Ensenada, Puerto Vallarta, and Mazatlan in Mexico I have never seen that a Cicada before.

Or a cute little kadydid. I love the sounds of the nightime kadydid. In NC, we all do a little experiment. The first evening you hear the kadydid (usually sometime in mid-July), circle that date on your calendar. Usually, 3 months later, on that same date will be our first frost of the year. I've kept a log for over 25 years when I'm up there and we will usually get a frost within a day or two of that date. Amazing, "old timers" predictions from long ago.....

SC: Y'all ought to visit Texas where we fixed that darn Cicada problem with our Texas-sized Cicada Killer Wasps (sphecius speciosus). These humming bird size critters pick up those pesky Cicadas, dig gopher hole sized burrows and drop them in as snack food for the kiddos.
For any of y'all considering moving to Texas, be advised these wasps sting humans far less than our smaller varieties, not in mass like our killer bees, and with far less venon than our fire ants.

Donna - they've come out of the ground in Walworth County, Wisconsin (Lake Geneva area) and man they are ugly! Here in the metro Milwaukee area, we are just north of where they are going to hatch out of the ground. I do know they weren't in my area 17 years ago.

I just drove back from Wisconsin Dells, the buggy's haven't struck there yet. don't think they're expecting them there, but they should find them nearby though. I don't expect any here in west central Indiana either, since we got hit hard in the last few years. The good news is they only stick around for about a month then they die.I am headed back up to the dells tomorrow and will be up there til Friday, I'll let you know if the little creeps pay us a visit
We also get some kind of species of them every summer, but they don't come out of the ground and you do see them so much, you jusy hear the clicking sound everywhere. And they will sometimes fly into you.
UUuggghhh, bugs.
And DiveMaster? all those things in Texas? killer bees, fire ants, and those wasps? how do you deal with that?
