When I went to the site about Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, the picture of the Andrew Sisters, brought back this memory.
When I was a kid, my Mother won a radio contest. She won this trip to the radio station. Stan Richards was a popular DJ, & exactly what she won I can't remember, but, we came home with a stack of autographed head shots, of famous singing stars..
The Andrew sisters was one, Les Paul & Mary Ford was another. I hung them on my wall...I really didn't know who they were, but.......
So, it brings me to the question..have you ever won a contest? I have won several, but never a major prize How about you?

The only time I have won anything is in a raffle - I bought about $80 worth of raffle tickets to support the local football program; then completely forgot about it until I got a phone call saying I won the pot - $2500.00. Wooot! The first thing I did was book a cruise for me, my sister, my nephew and my mom.

Hubby won grand prize in a AAA contest, a trip for 2 to Homestead for the NASCAR final races, tickets for all 3 days a hotel room plussome goodies. then the next year he won a woodworking contest which was 2 woodworking book sets, year for a magazine and a mini lathe.
This year I won a contest that Coco Cola had and boy did the compnay running the contest goof up. they sent me a letter that I had won tickest to the race in Bristol in March but then later said tickets for qualifying day. Well I complained since there is a big difference so I ended up with the qualifying ticket and will get tickets to the race next spring. No hotel but we have friends that live only 30 minutes from the track so we sent them the qualifying tickets and will stay with them next spring.
We enter contests all the time so we just never know.

We've never won anything, ever.... UNTIL..we were on a RCCI cruise to Mexico...my husband and I both entered this raffle for some jewelry, and you or a member of your family had to be present at the drawing to win. Wellllllllll we never win...so I left before the actual drawing...But, my husband, ever the optimist stayed.
The first named called was his! Since he was standing in the back of the theatre, he had to walk that longggggg walk up to the stage (he’s very reserved)..to received this really lovely gift. While he was walking back down the aisle, the second named was called and it was MINE! Yeahhhhhhhh....this is wonderful, it's kismet, finally the evil spell is broken...so I asked him, “Hey, where’s my prize guy? (excited smile, teeth showing)
His story...which he is sticking to by the way, is that there would have been a mob scene over the raffle being rigged! So, he just let them call another name...WHAT?????
I think he was just to embarrassed to turn around and go back up on stage.....the jewelry was really really nice by the way.
DARN!
Once I won a trip to Memphis for 2 people. I called my best friend in Texas and we met in Memphis. Of course we had to go to Graceland, the tickets for that were included. We had a great time. Friends since high school we really had more fun reuniting after all the years we had been apart.
Another time I won tickets to see Bruce Springsteen. I am not a rock fan and had never heard of him so I offered the tickets to anyone that wanted them. No one did so I tossed them out.
This past December I won tickets to see Martina McBride. Again I could not give them away so they got trashed too.
Recently I won $1100. playing bingo online.

I've been fortunate to win a few door prizes at various events and the most recent was a couple of raffles in NC. I won a Dewault (sp?) drill, gave it to my son, and a skill saw, gave it to my son-in-law and then a couple days later I won a CB radio.

When I was in Junior High I won a skateboard! This was the original skateboard, not what the kid's use now. I never could balance enough to use it!

I've never won a thing based on a contest of luck. Nada. Never. No how.
Onboard ship, I've done rather well at trivia and things like that. Actually, Terry and I make a killer pair on a trivia team, because she's a geography wizard, and I do well on some other things. All of which means that we're overstocked with caps, luggage straps, luggage tags and sports bottles from various cruise lines.
I'm very fortunate that I've never had any desire to gamble, because I'm sure it would have ruined me.
I can remember, sometime around 1967 or 68 or 69, I won a copy of Oliver's "Good Morning Starshine" album from a local radio station.
The reason I remember it now, is that that song has been re-released by somebody recently, some of the dumbest lyrics ever written! (dooby doo dooby, doooby abbbadaba, singin a song....)

This past February here in Tokyo, we went to a travel fair aimed at expatriates. They had a number of door prizes. Arlene won free bus tickets to airport in first raffle. We stayed around for the hourly drawings to see if I could win anything. We were there for four more drawings until the grand prizes were drawn and I won tickets to Guam and three nights in a brand new resort. First thing of any value that I have won.
We are going next month.

I won a cruise on the Norway - 7 nights. It was the First Prize - grand prize was two tickets to all the different professional sports venues all over Florida. Thought my prize was much better. First time I ever cruised alone (my friends were busy working or didn't want to leave their husbands) and it broke the ice for me. Pretty much have cruised alone ever since.
Like AR - I've also won numerous trivia contests on board ships - this past cruise in April on the Coral I won 12+ and as I had most of the prizes, I gave a lot of them away to new cruising friends.

I won a coffee maker at a grand opening years ago. DH and I don't drink coffee.
On our 25th anniversary cruise with friends, we all put our names in a drawing for a $2000 tanzanite necklace on the last day. You had to pick up the entry form in port.
DH decided that he was going to try to get the golf lesson that he'd been missing all week. (He couldn't catch up with the golf pro)
Guess who's name was pulled. Well, that necklace wouldn't have looked so great on him anyways.
It took me 4 times to post this. Darn kitten kept running across the keyboard - deleting the screen. She's in bed now.
A good friend of mine is head of surveillance at a local casino. A guy playing the slots won something like $250,000 and, while he was waiting for his cheque to be cut, he passed his time playing the $100 machine. He hit a second time, for another $200,000
The odds of that happening are near impossible. But apparently nobody plays the high-dollar slots, and that particular machine was "overdue", according to my friend.
When I worked in a grocery store in NH they had little in store contests just for the employees. The prizes were always vendor gifts. One contest was to guess the number of candies in the jar. I had no idea how many candies there were. I took my address which was 862 and looking at the jar I knew there were not that many. I turned the number around to 268, that felt better. I was right on the nose with my guess. The prize was a snow board. So funny for me to win a snowboard, I hate the cold and would never be out on the mountains in winter. One of the employees offered me $50 for the board and I took it. I was happy and she had a gift for her sons bithday.
Another time in the store my name got drawn for a beach towel. I still use that towel today.

What an apt question..... only yesterday I received a phone call from our local newspaper to say that I was the lucky winner of 2 first class return train tickets to anywhere in Britain so we think we will take a fantastic trip up to Edinburgh in Scotland and see the sights - beautiful city and hubs has never been.
Also back in 2002, I was very lucky to be a runner-up in a national newspaper competition where all you had to do was cut out 20 coupons and send them off in the post. I won £2,000 which can't be bad (nearly $4,000 at todays exchange rate) and it was just before we were flying over to Scottsdale to visit our US friends so came in very handy.
As they say, anyone can win - if your not in it, you cannot win it
Kind regards,
Kimmiegirl

My Dad went to Puerto Rico for a business convention back in the late 60's. He got to sit at the same table as the Head Liner at the hotel. The Head Liner was "Bobby Vinton" (before he became famous.) And he won a Mink Stole for my Mom.

I remember my mother telling me how many years ago the local electric company had a new line of appliances and were doing a promotion. The had frozen a diamond in an icecube. Everyone got to pick an icecube. My mom's was the lucky one - with a diamond. I can't remember how big it was, it think she actually gave it to me and I have it somewhere locked away - just in case I want to set it sometime.

RD... that is one of my favorite all-time songs. I look at the stars at night and start to sing it myself and it brings a huge smile to my face. Thanks for the trip to the stars.

The wins that I shared here are just a few of the many things I have won over the years. I have won a lot of little things, fun prizes from local radio stations. Door prizes. Being an avid bingo player I have won my share of bingo prizes. I used to use my bingo winnings to finance my cruise habit. When I win I set aside half of the money for the bank. The other half I use to play more or what ever I wantto spend it on. One prize that I have had my eye on for a long time and have not had the luck to win. The coveted "Ship On A Stick" Some day, somehow that golden ship will be mine!!!!
