Default The Gang that Couldn't Shoot Straight

Some of us agree that the TSA is, overall, a pretty sorry organization, popluated by many who are undertrained, undermotivated and underskilled.

But they may not be quite at the bottom of the federal government's law enforcement food chain.

There's a story here in DC that may not have made its way around the country. The incident took place the other day outside Walter Reed Army Medical Center. You know Walter Reed: it's the place where our returning wounded servicement get fabulous care, unless of course they happen to be outpatients. But that's another story.

This one is about two security guards at Walter Reed who were having a conversation. One of them thought that the other called him an unflattering name, and responded by pulling his gun and firing 15 shots at his colleague.

All 15 shots missed.

The putative victim of this affair denies that he said anything at all derogatory about his fellow officer. Whether he did or not, I'm happy that he is still with us.

But let's see. . .they wear uniforms, they carry guns, and apparently they can't hit a bull in the fanny with a bag of rice. Oh yes, and some of them think that rampant gunfire is the appropriate response to a verbal insult. Yep, sounds like the Homeland Security gang, all right.

That is incredible and, at the same time, scary.

That guy will probably apply for, and get, a management job with the TSA!

Sorry 'bout the discrpancy re the number of shots fired. It was 15 on the 11:00 news last night. Maybe they found five more bullet holes as the day wore on yesterday. Or, just as likely, NBC Washington got it wrong.

the funny thing is I just read 5 different news reports, none of the facts are the same from report to report -- some times quick news isn't the best, I would prefer to wait and have accurate news.

when I noticed that 15 shots were fired, I was trying to figure out what kind of gun that a security guard carried that had that many rounds I just picture a security guard with a normal service pistol that holds what 12 rounds and thinking that this guy even had to stop and reload to squeeze off a couple of more shots
like I said not a gun person, so I don't know these things...

The standard capacity of a Glock 19 (common law enforcement sidearm) is 15, 9mm rounds.

Take care,
Mike

If they ever decide to make new episodes of the A-Team.... or another Arnold Schwarzenegger mercenary flick....

These guys can try out for "bad guy" roles.

(You guys are holding machine guns, but you can't collectively hit the one guy standing right in the open... hint... move the little dust puffs closer to the guy you are aiming at)

Someone tried to teach me to shoot a gun once....He gave up after a few hours. He started with a can as a target. When I didn't get that one, he got bigger targets. We finally agreed that I couldn't hit the side of a barn! I've been told I can have a gun, but no bullets because someone would surely take my gun away and shoot me with it if I had bullets.

My only serious encounter with firearms was when, as a lark, I took a riflery course as a no-credit elective in college. It was taught by an ROTC sergeant, and it wound up being a hell of a lot of fun.

Except for a few days with pistols (which I thought were crude and crass by comparison), we mostly got to use beautifully maintained match Winchester rifles, learned the four shooting positions and had enough time and practice to get reasonably good. By the time it was over I could shoot in the 90's from the prone position (the easiest one).

The game was that you shot 10 targets at a time, with the bull's-eye of each being worth 10 points. But I remember the instructor saying that in serious competition the winning score was always above 100. How can that be? Well, the rules are that if you break a line on the target you get the higher score. So you just have to break the inner circle to get your 10. But that circle is just a tiny bit smaller than the slug. So if you pass an empty shell casing through the hole and it completely obliterates the inner circle, you get 11. I did it once or twice (dumb luck), but apparently the serious marksmen do it routinely. That's some shootin'.

It also made you respect the precision that is possible in a beautifully made rifle.

Beyond that, a friend collects historic guns, and I've shot at a few tin cans out on his farm, but that's the extent of my experience with firearms.

Ken, I happen to carry a stainless Colt Government model. My backup is a Colt Defender Plus model. Both carry 8 + 1 rounds of good ol' hollow point .45 caliber lead.

Michael, that'll ger-er-done! I carried the S&W .38/.357 for years, and later, think I was probably the only one who carried the little Beretta .380 model 84F/P as a backup. (15+1).
