Default Modern Technology

So here I am, sitting on the deck in my back yard. It’s 82 degrees out, and sunny, with a mild breeze blowing. I’m in the company of my tropical plants, and am enjoying an ice-cold beverage!

And through the wonders of modern technology, I am also at this very moment, enjoying the company of my friends here at Cruisemates via my laptop and home wireless network.

At some point, I’ll reach over and pick up my cordless phone and have a pizza delivered!

As one who struggled to survive, and had little idea that people existed 5 miles away, let alone on the other side of the world, a caveman would have marveled at what we take for granted!

Dean, you can say that again! I, for one, take so much technology for granted! I'd be lost without my laptop and wireless internet, cell phone, cable tv, DVR, etc., etc., etc.,

I guess what amazes me is how modern technology has increased my reach, so to speak.

I can sit here on my deck -- and without being physically connected to anything -- post in the threads at Cruisemates.

Also I can open a window on my laptop, and get a real-time weather radar picture. Again -- without being connected to anything -- I can "see" approaching raindrops over 300 miles away!

And I can do all of this at the same time.

To us, this is simply technological convenience -- to our caveman, it's magic........

When I did research for papers for my MBA I used the resources of dozens of libraries without ever visiting one of them by using the internet. The resources were so good I only had to visit the college library I had borrowing priviliges at once. That was 10 years ago and the offerings on the internet have multiplied (not just porn or cruise discussion boards ).

I live in NY. I work with someone every day that lives in NC. We do many joint projects and proposals. I have worked with them for about 5 years.

We have never met.

Who was it that said, "Any technology, sufficiently advanced, is indistinguishable from magic."? Marshall McCluhan, Arthur Clarke, somebody like that. One of my favorite quotes and I think of it often these days. I'm like Dean, sitting out on my deck, under the umbrella, cool drink at hand, phone next to drink, working on my laptop - MAGIC!

I love modern technology and stay up on it. The greatest fear is that the world takes it all "for granted" and forgets about the fundamentals.

It's great that we can make friends across the country and the world but many people still don't know or talk to their own neighbors.

Relying on wireless technology but don't bother to secure home, wireless network or use our unsecured wi-fi computer on any public wireless network that can be found.

Still use cell phones, cordless or VoIP for the only phone communications, never realizing that an electrical outage, weather, capacity or network outage leaves them without communication.

Have a false sense of security that the Internet is disaster proof.

Use GPS systems for transportation when simple signal blocking can take out the satellite signal or taking out of the satellites can stop many targeting and transportation systems.

Spend hours a day on a computer and know little more than how to turn it on and start email, browser and the basic programs without having no idea how the thing really works.

Have all communications placed into one small device (Smartphones/Blackberry/Broadband computer) that is centrally controlled by one company and the communication to and from that device is reliant on that company.

Maybe I'm being a bit of "Debby Downer" but it's something that always concerns me as technology advances and people just "use" it and then it becomes essential to everyday life. When it becomes essential is when the problems start. If it goes away people have no idea how to function without it.

Take care,
Mike

Here's to you, Dean, and all of our other friends who, through this marvelous and wonderous technology, can electronically, reach out and touch each other and shake hands... CHEERS, PROSIT!

Look at the wonderful friendships that have formed just on this site alone through the magic of technology. Last weeks dinner was proof of that.
Amazing!
