Default AKA (better known for) Generational Gap

It's funny that if you live long enough, an entire generation will know famous people for things other then what we remember them for

-long before OJ Simpson became infamous for his Bronco chase, he was known as one of the greatest running backs in the history of college/pro football and for gaining endorsements with Hertz

-long before George Foreman became famous for his cooking grills..he was known for being a boxing patsy for Ali in the famous "rope-a-dope" in Africa

-long before Paul Newman was famous for his salad dressing..he was an actor known for a few "small roles" in a few motion pictures

-long before...

Long before Britney Spears was known for showing off her private parts, she was much admired as a Teen Pop Star.

Long before Sonny Bono was Mayor..... he was married to who? They're dead? Nope. just him.

Penn & Teller used to be magicians.... now what do they do, exactly???

Ahhh-nold used to be a dumb body-builder. Then he became a dumb movie star. Now he's a dumb politician.

Who's Sonny Bono? U2 lead singer's kid?

That would be Sonny & Cher. Sonny's gone now, Cher uses only one name and their kids are Chastity (!) and Elijah Blue. Chastity is Sonny's, Eli is Greg Allmand's of the Allmand Brothers Band. How do I remember this stuff, when I can't even remember what I had for supper?

MikaLyn, Marj's 18 yo was shocked when I told her that George Foreman was Heavyweight Champion, she has always known him as the grill man and the Minike Muffler spokesman.

When I was a kid every radio was tuned in WABC 770 am which is now sadly a refuge for political extremists.

I now pay $41 every quarter for Sirius and am quite happy to do so. I can listen to exactly what music or programming I want, wherever or whenever I go.

Arnold dumb? Come on man. I don't care what your political side is, that just isn't the case. You're talking about a guy who flew into this country with about 20 bucks in his pocket and didn't speak any english. All he had were some dreams and goals and nothing was going to stop him...And nothing ever did.

Arnold got where he is through hard work, guts and determination. He is the epitome of a self made man. He's rich, successful and has accomplished every goal he has ever set for himself. Maybe you can explain to me what's "dumb" about that?

I can't believe that finding gas at $2.83 per gallon seems like a good deal.

At a time when the mid-East was known primarily for sand, camels, pyramids and Lawrence, the first oil well was in Pennsylvania.

Everyone was amazed at the two way radio wrist watch that Dick Tracy had in the comics and a cell phone was a phone in a cell.

remember on the cruise ships in the 70's and 80's the dining room was always on the bottom deck with no windows (and there was only one place to eat)...if there were balconies it was only for the most expensive suites, if you were in the "chea; cabins" you shared a bathroom down the hall with several cabins, you had to dress up (tie and suit jacket for the men) on every meal..there was no such thing as a spa and the indoor swimming pool was on the bottom deck also

Back Packs The kids were talking today in class about what we used before Back packs. I told them we carried everything. They asked about the little students (Kindergarten, etc) I told them they also carried their stuff, or it was pinned to our clothes.

They said what would happen if you had lots of Homework, and had to take home lots of books? I told them we carried those too.

Ahh-nold Dumb?

Come on, if you looked up Dumb in the American Pop Culture Encyclopedia, you'd see a big picture of Ahh-nold, and a small picture of Paris Hilton.

Phooey on reality. It bites.

Frankie Valli is very much alive, performs and has had a part in the Sopranos.

WCBS-FM recreated a lot of the WABC atmosphere with many of the WABC and WMCA DJs until it was replaced by a free form FM mix station Jack-FM. Obviously NYers did not give a Jack as ratings plummeted, CBS-FM is now back, although now I work in Philly and am out of range.

NY radio has been in bad shape no jazz, no country and no oldies until CBS-FM was recreated. I cannot fathom this in the largest market in the nation. Country concerts regularly sell out and Jazz is always big at some clubs.

Doug..I meant Bruce Morrow..I know Frankie Valli is alive because I saw him perform in New Orleans..I always loved Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons when they performed at the Latin Casino (outside of Philadelphia) in the hey days of the 60's

what???..no more WBLS-FM "the quiet storm" for great jazz at night..thank God I no longer live in the north

Luanne must have very strong arms from carrying all those books to school instead of putting them in her book bag

as far as Arnold goes...he has done very well so I would not consider him in the "d" category..plus as a Republican he married a Kennedy which is no small feat...his love for Special Olympics makes him ok in my book..and since we don't discuss politics on this board.....

When I was stationed on Okinawa in the early '60's the Datsun (now Nissan) was the little car, and if you wanted a big luxury taxi, you looked for a Toyota! (you could squeeze the driver and three others inside if you tried) Honda didn't make any cars at that time, only tiny motorbikes. WOW,,,have things changed or what?

Cruise Cynic:

What is your beef about people with accents? Are you one of those folks who think, for example, that someone with a southern accent is dumb or slower somehow? Is that really the best reason you can come up with to call the guy dumb? You must have a field day on a cruise ship of 60 or so different nationalities on staff.

ready2board>

I am not the first person to call Ahh-nold dumb. He is an American Icon, and not for his intelligence. He has made millions playing a bonehead, so he is fair game in my book.

His accent has nothing whatsoever to do with it, and I resent the implication if you are indeed serious. I guess you completely missed the point that my whole statement was in jest. But that's your shortcoming, not mine.

As for immigrants, Southerners, and people with accents, if the KKK were to attack a cruise ship, I would be the very first passenger they'd want to string up.

Ken..I owned a 1972 Datsun 240Z (lime green) and a 1959 VW beetle (black ) at the same time and the beetle lasted longer...WBLS is classic soul now? I think most radio stations are owned by 1 of 3 major corporations but I am glad to hear the Cousin Bruce Morrow is on pay radio

I now own a 2003 VW beetle turbo (black) and at one time was thinking about getting one of the new Nissan 300 Z just for old times sake

Cruise Cynic..when are you going on your cruise again so we can see the "soft side" of your personality

here's another one to add to the list..back in the 60's no one paid for water..today's generation would not know how to drink tap water if they were dying of thirst

Venice> When someone calls you names (racist) you just gotta reply...

And I have yet to punch out any of my tablemates... although some were eminently deserving.

So I guess you'll be able to figure out which gentleman was quoted in AARP:The Magazine offering this bit of hard reality, "Once you've seen your face on a bottle of salad dressing, it's hard to take yourself seriously." Yep, it was that film director, racing enthusiast and ex-movie heartthrob named Newman (not the one on Seinfeld.)
